Superior colliculus controls the activity of the substantia nigra pars compacta and ventral tegmental area in an asymmetrical manner.

J Neurosci

January 2025

Department of Neurophysiology and Chronobiology, Institute of Zoology and Biomedical Research, Jagiellonian University, 9 Gronostajowa street, 30-387 Kraków, Poland.

Dopaminergic (DA) neurons of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) and ventral tegmental area (VTA) play a crucial role in controlling animals' orienting and approach behaviors toward relevant environmental stimuli. The ventral midbrain receives sensory input from the superior colliculus (SC), a tectal region processing information from contralateral receptive fields of various modalities. Given the significant influence of dopamine release imbalance in the left and right striatum on animals' movement direction, our study aimed to investigate the lateralization of the connection between the lateral SC and the midbrain DA system in male rats.

Introduction: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder that primarily affects the spine and sacroiliac joints, leading to pain, stiffness, and progressive thoracolumbar kyphotic deformity. A key complication in advanced AS is the development of Andersson lesions (AL), degenerative vertebral lesions resulting from the disease's progression. These lesions can cause significant mechanical pain, often mistaken for the chronic discomfort associated with AS.

Impaired semantic control in the logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia.

Brain Commun

December 2024

Medical Research Council (MRC) Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, University of Cambridge, Cambridge CB2 7EF, UK.

We investigated semantic cognition in the logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia, including (i) the status of verbal and non-verbal semantic performance; and (ii) whether the semantic deficit reflects impaired semantic control. Our hypothesis that individuals with logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia would exhibit semantic control impairments was motivated by the anatomical overlap between the temporoparietal atrophy typically associated with logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia and lesions associated with post-stroke semantic aphasia and Wernicke's aphasia, which cause heteromodal semantic control impairments. We addressed the presence, type (semantic representation and semantic control; verbal and non-verbal), and progression of semantic deficits in logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia.

The human visual system is tuned to symmetry, and the neural response to visual symmetry has been well studied. One line of research measures an Event Related Potential (ERP) component called the Sustained Posterior Negativity (SPN). Amplitude is more negative at posterior electrodes when participants see symmetrical patterns compared to asymmetrical patterns.

Degree of Preoperative Bilateral Hearing Affects Patient-Reported Outcome in Primary Stapedotomy.

Otol Neurotol

January 2025

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head, and Neck Surgery, Institute of Clinical Sciences, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how unilateral versus bilateral hearing impairments affect patient satisfaction and hearing outcomes after stapedotomy surgery.
  • Over 90% of patients reported hearing improvements post-surgery, but those with unilateral impairment had lower satisfaction compared to those with bilateral impairments.
  • Tinnitus was more prevalent in patients with unilateral hearing issues, indicating additional challenges they faced after the procedure.
