The Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia "Leonardo da Vinci" in Milan is exposing two pairs of canal lock gates, used to control the water flow in Milan canal system, whose design appears in the Leonardo's Codex Atlanticus. The wood present in the gates has been deeply characterised by mean of a multidisciplinary investigation involving i) DNA barcoding of wood fragments; ii) microbial community characterisation, and iii) chemical analyses. DNA barcoding revealed that two fragments of the gates belonged to wood species widely used in the middle age: Fagus sylvatica and Picea abies. The chemical characterisations were based on the use of ionic liquid as dissolving medium in order to analyse the entire cell wall material by means of Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) and 2D-NMR-HSQC techniques. This multidisciplinary analytical approach was able to highlight the complex nature of the degradation occurred during the gate operation (XVI-XVIII centuries): an intricate interplay between microbial populations (i.e. Shewanella), inorganic factors (i.e. iron from nails), physical factors and the lignocellulosic material.

Objective: To establish the relevance of examining the internal organs for the presence of diatom plankton after drowning in the waters of the White Sea.
Material And Methods: We studied the biological material (fragments of lungs and kidneys) from the corpses of people found in the waters of the Kemskaya Bay and Onega Bay of the White Sea and waters from different areas of the White Sea for the presence of diatoms.
Results: In all cases of drowning in the waters of the White Sea (in the area of the city of Belomorsk and the Kem skerries), marine and freshwater diatoms were found in the lungs and kidneys of the deceased in quantities sufficient to diagnose death from drowning in water.

Background: Although the intramedullary nail represents the treatment for most tibia diaphyseal fractures, there is no agreement on the configuration of the distal locking screws. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of the configuration of distal locking bolts on the healing of a tibial shaft fracture.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 170 closed fractures of the tibia diaphyseal operated consecutively between 2018 and 2021.

: Recent advancements in hip arthroplasty aim to enhance the stability, longevity, and functionality of femoral implants. However, the distal fitting of femoral stems, often caused by metaphyseal-diaphyseal mismatch, remains a significant issue, particularly in patients with Dorr type A femora. Such mismatches can result in suboptimal implant performance, leading to potential complications.

Regenerative endodontic procedures (REP) aim at reestablishing tooth vitality by replacing the irreversibly damaged dental pulp removed by the dental practitioner with a new functional one. The current treatment of advanced caries relies on the replacement of the inflamed or necrosed dental pulp with an inert filling material. This leads to a functional but non-vital tooth, which lacks the ability to sense dental tissue damage, and to protect from further bacterial attack.
