In this work, the technique of hot embossing has been applied for the bonding of alumina-phosphate (PAL) glass with cobalt-doped magnesium aluminate (MALO) crystals. The application of the hot embossing technique for bonding of PAL/MALO is a competitive method, as compared to the existing thermobonding techniques. The obtained PAL/MALO interfaces show high quality, similar to what is currently achievable with other, more expensive traditional methods. The interfaces of the bonded samples have been successfully tested for strength and damage thresholds. The damage threshold is estimated to be around 4.5-7.9/. Therefore, microlasers can be developed based on the obtained components.

Inspired by ancient trilobites, novel curved microlens arrays (CMLAs) were designed. Direct, fast, and low-cost CMLAs with two focal planes were fabricated using ultraprecision machining technology and hot embossing technology. We designed four pairs of artificial compound eyes (ACEs) composed of large and small lenses with four different curvatures to achieve focusing and imaging on two focal planes.

Article Synopsis
  • The roller-to-plate (R2P) hot-embossing process is a cost-effective technique for creating high-quality micro/nano-optical components, particularly beneficial for night vision applications using chalcogenide glass.
  • The study addresses critical challenges in R2P hot embossing, such as the costs of curved mold manufacturing and the properties of materials, while introducing a new process to fabricate flat chalcogenide glass structures.
  • Experimental results demonstrate that by adjusting parameters like roller temperature, speed, and pressure, the process can achieve a high filling rate and low surface roughness, laying groundwork for future research improvements in the hot embossing technique.

School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nanjing Tech University, Nanjing 211816, China. Electronic address:

Efforts toward developing wound dressings that effectively monitor healing have become at the forefront of the field of wound healing. However, monofunctionality, biotoxicity, and passive therapy constrain wound patches. Herein, a hypoallergenic wound patch integrating moisture monitoring, motion sensing and electrical stimulation for wound healing is presented.

Microfluidics offers transformative potential in healthcare by enabling miniaturized, user-friendly, and cost-effective devices for disease diagnostics among other biomedical applications; however, their meaningful adoption is severely hindered, especially in developing countries and resource-limited settings, by the cost, time, and complexity of their fabrication. To overcome this barrier of access, this work develops a novel approach for highly efficient (<4 h), cost-effective, and clean-room-free fabrication of functional polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based microfluidic devices based on coupling stereolithography three-dimensional (3D) printing with hot embossing. The strategy exhibits high fidelity between the digital design and final device, remarkable transfer accuracy between the 3D print and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) mold, in addition to highly smooth surfaces ( < 1 μm).

The organisms of animals with full spatial motion ability present fine and complex 3D structures, showing reliable adhesion ability to the substrate. As core issues, the design and manufacture of complex morphology are essential in bionic adhesion technology. Specifically, the end-expanded microstructure array of high adhesion under low preload has widespread potential in the nondestructive fixation and handling of fragile objects.
