A new kind of on-demand dissolution hydrogel is successfully synthesized by modification of chitosan using γ-selenobutyrolactone. The chitosan hydrogel with different selenium contents is formed by ring opening of γ-selenobutyrolactone with the amines of D-glucosamine units on the chitosan backbone. The structure of the hydrogel was confirmed by H NMR, XRD and XPS. Its physical and biological properties were evaluated by rheology characterization, degradation tests and cytotoxicity test. The hydrogel showed excellent biocompatibility and good degradation properties under oxidation or reduction conditions. All the evidence demonstrated that this type of material has good prospects for dressing applications.

The biocompatible autonomous self-healing hydrogels have great potential in biomedical applications. However, the fairly weak tensile strength of the hydrogels seriously hinders their application. Here, we introduced chitosan (CS) into the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-tannic acid (TA) hydrogel and investigated the effects of the CS content, as CS can not only form reversible H bonds with PVA and TA but also form reversible electrostatic interactions with TA.

The healing of wounds in aging skin is a challenging issue that has not been thoroughly studied. Composite hydrogels made from natural polysaccharides have shown potential as dressings for various types of wounds. In this study, we prepared a polysaccharide-based composite hydrogel to provide a new strategy for treating aging skin wounds.

Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) are self-assembled systems formed from oppositely charged polymers, used to create hydrogels for cell culture. This work was aimed at additive manufacturing 3D hydrogels made of a PEC between chitosan (Cs) and alginate, as well as their investigation for in vitro 3D ovarian cancer modeling. PEC hydrogels stability in cell culture medium demonstrated their suitability for long-term cell culture applications.

The VCo-LDH/CS hydrogel beads were created by combining VCo-layered double hydroxide (VCo-LDH) and chitosan (CS) using a cross-linking process with epichlorohydrin. These beads were specifically designed to remove tetracycline (TTC). To characterize the VCo-LDH/CS hydrogel beads, several analytical techniques were used, with PXRD, XPS, FESEM, EDX, and FT-IR.
