Here we report a simple self-masking technique for fabricating bioinspired broadband antireflection coatings on both single-crystalline and multicrystalline silicon wafers with the assistance of a polyimide tape. Subwavelength-structured moth-eye nanopillars, which exhibit superior antireflection performance over a broad range of visible and near-IR wavelengths, can be patterned uniformly on the wafer surface by applying a chlorine-based reactive ion etching (RIE) process. The resulting random nanopillars show improved antireflection properties compared with ordered nanopillars templated by colloidal lithography under the same RIE conditions.

Biotransformation of microplastics from three-layer face masks by nitrifying-denitrifying consortia.

J Hazard Mater

December 2024

Instituto Potosino de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica A.C., División de Ciencias Ambientales, Camino a la Presa San José 2055, Lomas 4a Sección, C.P. 78216, San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Electronic address:

COVID-19 increased microplastics (MP) contamination due to the extensive use of single-use personal protective equipment, particularly three-layer face masks. MP from face masks enter wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which were not designed to remove them. We utilized nitrifying-denitrifying microbial consortia and synthetic urban wastewater to evaluate the biotransformation of MP from each layer of three-layer face masks made of polypropylene (PP).

Department of pharmaceutics, School of Pharmacy, Guangdong Pharmaceutical University, Guangzhou 510006, China; Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Advanced Drug Delivery, Guangdong Provincial Engineering Center of Topical Precise Drug Delivery System, Guangdong Pharmaceutical University, Guangzhou 510006, China. Electronic address:

Tilmicosin (TMS) is an important antibiotic in veterinary medicine, but its extreme bitter taste limits its use. In this study, TMS was encapsulated in octenyl succinic anhydride modified starch/maltodextrin (HI-CAP/MD) composite capsules with a spray drying method. The TMS microcapsules (TMS-MC) exhibited good drug loading performance with drug loading (DL) and encapsulation efficiency (EE) of 9.

Crystal Patterning from Aqueous Solutions via Solutal Instabilities.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

December 2024

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 77 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139, United States.

Fluid instabilities can be harnessed for facile self-assembly of patterned structures on the nano- and microscale. Evaporative self-assembly from drops is one simple technique that enables a range of patterning behaviors due to the multitude of fluid instabilities that arise due to the simultaneous existence of temperature and solutal gradients. However, the method suffers from limited controllability over patterns that can arise and their morphology.

A pediatric dosage form for crizotinib (Xalkori) was commercialized using quality-by-design principles in a material-sparing fashion. The dosage form consists of spherical multiparticulates (microspheres or pellets) that are coated and encapsulated in capsules for opening. The crizotinib (Xalkori)-coated pellet product is approved in the US for pediatric patients 1 year of age and older and young adults with relapsed or refractory, systemic anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) and unresectable, recurrent, or refractory inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) that is ALK-positive.
