The pattern of gangliosides in membranes of erythrocytes was examined in healthy donors and in alcoholic subjects. Seven different gangliosides could be detected. In healthy donors the following pattern was found: GM3 = 17.6%, SPG = 43.1%, GD3 = 9.1%, GD1a = 12.8%, FucGD1b = 5.2%, GT1b = 6.7% and GX = 5.7%. The GM3 and FucDG1b fraction were decreased statistically significantly in alcoholics.

Introduction: Fibrotic cocktail (FC) is a combination of pro-fibrotic and pro-inflammatory mediators that induces early fibrotic changes in organotypic lung models. We hypothesised that transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1) alone induces a pro-fibrotic effect similar to FC. Our aim was to compare the pro-fibrotic effects of TGF-β1 with FC in human precision-cut lung slices (PCLS).

Antibodies, essential components of adaptive immunity, derive their remarkable diversity primarily from V(D)J gene rearrangements, particularly within the heavy chain complementarity-determining region 3 (CDR-H3) where D genes play a major role. Traditionally, D genes were thought to recombine only in the forward direction, despite having identical recombination signal sequences (12 base pair spacers) at both ends. This observation led us to question whether these symmetrical sequences might enable bidirectional recombination.

Objective: The progress made in cancer immunology has led to the development of innovative therapeutic strategies. However, despite these advances, the superficial characteristics of immune cells have been frequently overlooked: This oversight may be attributed to a limited understanding of the intricate relationships between immune cells and their microenvironment. This study seeks to address this limitation by comprehensively examining cell size and granularity in breast cancer (BC) patients and healthy donors (HD).

Background: Rapid, reproducible, and noninvasive diagnostic methods like Ultrasonography (US) and plethysmographic measurements such as the perfusion index (PI) and pleth variablity index (PVI) have great potential value for emergency trauma cases in which blood loss needs to be recognized quickly and accurately.
Objectives: We planned this study to evaluate the utility of US, PI, and PVI in detecting early-stage hemorrhage and mimicking volume replacement using a platelet apheresis model.
Methods: This prospective, observational study included 46 healthy platelet apheresis volunteers who met inclusion criteria.

Background: Non-absorbed dietary emulsifiers, including carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), directly disturb intestinal microbiota, thereby promoting chronic intestinal inflammation in mice. A randomised controlled-feeding study (Functional Research on Emulsifiers in Humans, FRESH) found that CMC also detrimentally impacts intestinal microbiota in some, but not all, healthy individuals.
Objectives: This study aimed to establish an approach for predicting an individual's sensitivity to dietary emulsifiers via their baseline microbiota.
