Different benzofuran derivatives are synthesized via a catalyst-free reaction between nitroepoxides and salicylaldehydes. In the employed methodology, KCO and DMF have been used at 110 °C, and the reactions were completed after 12 h in 33-84% yields. The highest yields were obtained using 3-nitrosalicylaldehyde. Finally, a plausible mechanism was proposed for the reaction, and some evidence was provided for this mechanism such as the detection of released acetate anion (using FTIR) and isolation and structure determination of the critical intermediate.

The ligand-free Lewis acid-mediated regioselective hydroamination and hydroarylation of styrenes have been successfully developed in the presence of isatins or heterocyclic aryl compounds such as benzothiophenes and benzofurans. The reactions tolerate a variety of functional groups and afford the corresponding products in moderate to good yields. Deuterium labeling experiments show that the functionalized hydrogen of styrenes was derived from the nitrogen-hydrogen of the substrates in the hydroamination.

A synthetic strategy of a three-component spiro-pyrrolidine compound based on benzofuran via an [3+2] azomethine ylide cycloaddition reaction is reported herein. Under mild optimal conditions, this reaction can quickly produce potentially bioactive compounds with a wide range of substrates, high yield, and simple operation. The desired products were obtained with a yield of 74-99% and a diastereomeric ratio (dr) of >20:1.

Article Synopsis
  • Single cell calcium (Ca) imaging, utilizing microscopy and the Fura-2/AM indicator, is crucial for studying Ca channels activated by various stimuli.
  • When Fura-2/AM enters cells, it is converted to Fura-2, which binds calcium and shows a measurable change in fluorescence based on calcium concentration.
  • This method allows for real-time monitoring of Ca changes across multiple cells, facilitating efficient data analysis and improving understanding of calcium signaling in cells.

Xanthine nucleosides play a significant role in the expansion of the four-letter genetic code. Herein, 7-functionalized 8-aza-7-deazaxanthine ribo- and 2'-deoxyribonucleosides are described. 2-Amino-6-alkoxy nucleosides were converted to halogenated 8-aza-7-deazaxanthine nucleosides by deamination followed by hydroxy/alkoxy substitution.

Acenaphthylene-fused heteroarenes with a variety of five- and six-membered heterocycles such as thiophene, furan, benzofuran, pyrazole, pyridine and pyrimidine were synthesized via an efficient Pd-catalyzed reaction cascade in good to high yields (45-90%). This cascade involves an initial Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction between 1,8-dihalonaphthalenes and heteroarylboronic acids or esters, followed by an intramolecular C-H arylation under the same conditions to yield the final heterocyclic fluoranthene analogues. The method was further employed to access polyoxygenated benzo[]fluoranthenes, which are all structurally relevant to benzo[]fluoranthene-based fungal natural products.
