The β-1,3-glucanase gene in Ostrinia furnacalis was first obtained by RT-PCR. The real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR showed that the expression level of β-1,3-glucanase in the midgut of O. furnacalis was higher than in other tissues. Moreover, the expression level in the larval stage was higher in egg, pupa, and adult stages. The optimal pH of recombinant O. furnacalis β-1,3-glucanase OfLam to the substrate laminarin was 4.5, and the optimum reaction temperature was 50°C. The enzyme exhibited a K of 1.59 ± 0.28 mg/mL and a k of 15.8 ± 0.66 s . Ostrinia furnacalis β-1,3-glucanase has a similar catalytic efficiency to other insect-derived β-1,3-glucanases. The recombinant OfLam has a broad substrate spectrum and can hydrolyze fungal cell walls, suggesting a new source of enzymes for biological control strategies that target fungal cell walls.

Developing simple and efficient multi-gene expression systems is crucial for multi-trait improvement or bioproduction in transgenic plants. In previous research, an -based bicistronic system from the nonpathogenic fungus efficiently expressed multiple enzyme proteins in yeast and maize, and the heterologous enzymes successfully performed their catalytic activity to reconstruct the biosynthetic pathway in the host organism. Unlike enzyme proteins, some heterologous functional proteins (such as insecticidal proteins) are dose-dependent and they need to express sufficient levels to perform their biological functions.

Living systems cannot rely on random intermolecular approaches toward cell crowding, and hidden mechanisms must be present to favor only those molecular interactions required explicitly by the biological function. Electromagnetic messaging among proteins is proposed from the observation that charged amino acids located on the protein surface are mostly in adjacent sequence positions and/or in spatial proximity. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been used to predict electric charge proximities arising from concerted motions of charged amino acid side chains in two protein model systems, human ubiquitin and the chitinolytic enzyme from .

Plant natural products are crucial in defending against herbivorous insects and are widely used in pest control, yet their mechanisms remain complex and insufficiently studied. This study employed a reverse strategy to investigate the mechanism of camptothecin (CPT), a botanical pesticide. By using a CPT-based chemical probe coupled with proteomic analysis, immune-related proteins, including those involved in prophenoloxidase (PPO) activation and antimicrobial peptide (AMP) synthesis, were identified in the Asian corn borer, .

Background: Parasitic wasps manipulate host development for successful parasitization. When the host Ostrinia furnacalis is parasitized by the parasitoid Macrocentrus cingulum, its larvae fail to pupate and are consumed as nutrition by the wasp larvae. However, the mechanism by which M.
