A classification of magnetic superspace groups compatible with the helical and cycloidal magnetic modulations is presented. Helical modulations are compatible with groups from crystal classes 1, 2, 222, 4, 422, 3, 32, 6 and 622, while cycloidal modulations are compatible with groups from crystal classes 1, 2, m and mm2. For each magnetic crystal class, the directions of the symmetry-allowed (non-modulated) net ferromagnetic moment and electric polarization are given. The proposed classification of superspace groups is tested on experimental studies of type-II multiferroics published in the literature.

Van-der-Waals magnetic materials can be exfoliated to realize ultrathin sheets or interfaces with highly controllable optical or spintronics responses. In majority, these are collinear ferro-, ferri-, or antiferromagnets, with a particular scarcity of lattice-incommensurate helimagnets of defined left- or right-handed rotation sense, or helicity. Here, we report polarized neutron scattering experiments on DyTe, whose layered structure has highly metallic tellurium layers separated by double-slabs of dysprosium square nets.

The magnetic structure of chromium arsenide CrAs is studied with neutron powder diffraction at ambient pressure in the temperature range 1.5-300 K as well as with neutron single-crystal diffraction at 2 K and 0.12 GPa.

Chirality in condensed matter has recently become a topic of the utmost importance because of its significant role in the understanding and mastering of a large variety of new fundamental physical mechanisms. Versatile experimental approaches, capable to reveal easily the exact winding of order parameters, are therefore essential. Here we report x-ray resonant magnetic scattering as a straightforward tool to reveal directly the properties of chiral magnetic systems.

Temperature-dependent specific heat, magnetization and neutron diffraction data have been collected in zero magnetic field for polycrystalline samples of MnW1-x Mo x O4 (x ⩽ 0.2) solid solution whose end-member MnWO4 exhibits a magnetoelectric multiferroic phase (AF2 phase) between T 1 ≈ 8 K and T 2 = 12.5 K.
