So far, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused less casualty in Eastern Asia areas compared to the other parts of the world. The pattern of less casualty in the pandemic origin has also been observed in the three main flu pandemics in the last century. It is reasonable to speculate that less casualty of COVID-19/flu in the pandemic origin is likely due to the preexisting cross-immunity to some close viruses being more prevalent in those regions. Experts and modelers should scale up the severity of a flu-like viral epidemic to predict its real severity for the rest of the world.

Four years after the COVID-19 pandemic, a very limited number of drugs has been marketed; thus, the search for new medications still represents a compelling need. In our previous work on antiviral, antiparasitic, and antiproliferative agents, we described several compounds (- and -) structurally related to clofazimine, chloroquine, and benzimidazole derivatives. Thus, we deemed it worthwhile to test them against the replication of SARS-CoV-2, together with a few other compounds (, and -), which showed some analogy to miscellaneous anti-coronavirus agents.

Genomics is a cornerstone of modern pathogen epidemiology yet demonstrating transmission in a One Health context is challenging, as strains circulate and evolve within and between diverse hosts and environments. To identify phylogenetic linkages and better define relevant measures of genomic relatedness in a One Health context, we collated 5471 Escherichia coli genome sequences from Australia originating from humans (n = 2996), wild animals (n = 870), livestock (n = 649), companion animals (n = 375), environmental sources (n = 292) and food (n = 289) spanning over 36 years. Of the 827 multi-locus sequence types (STs) identified, 10 STs were commonly associated with cross-source genomic clusters, including the highly clonal ST131, pandemic zoonotic lineages such as ST95, and emerging human ExPEC ST1193.

Acute hepatitis of unknown etiology (non-HepA-E hepatitis) emerged affecting children in 2021 and in parallel with the COVID-19 pandemic. In the present article, we performed an analysis between two plasma samples from pediatric patients, one with non-HepA-E hepatitis and the other healthy, to evaluate possible proteomic alterations associated with viral targets as possible causative agents and pathophysiological processes using the high-resolution and label-free LC-MS/MS technique. We identified 72 altered differentially expressed proteins, 45 upregulated and 27 downregulated.
