Three different thermo-responsive fluorescent thermometers were constructed by regulating the triplet energy level of organic ligands in isostructural Eu/Tb mixed MOFs. Among them, a quite unusual and rarely reported temperature-dependent fluorescence behavior was observed in LnBDC-NH, and EuTbNDC is effective in the physiological range with the maximum relative sensitivity of 7.32% °C.

Eu/Tb metal-organic frameworks (Eu/Tb-MOFs), exhibiting Eu and Tb emissions, stand out as some of the most fascinating luminescent thermometers. As the relative thermal sensitivity model is limited to its lack of precision for fitting ratio of Eu and Tb emissions, accurately predicting the sensing performance of Eu/Tb-MOFs remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report a series of luminescent Eu/Tb-MOF thermometers, EuTbL, with excellent thermal sensitivity around physiological levels, achieved through the tuning energy transfer from ligands to Eu and Tb and between the Ln ions.

Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) broaden the optical sensing applications of lanthanide ions due to the antenna effect between organic ligands and metals. However, the sensitization ability of the ligand to metal ions is limited, and maximizing the sensitization of the electrochemiluminescence behavior of Eu is still a challenge for the application of Ln-MOFs. Therefore, under the guidance of the "cascade sensitization mechanism" based on the antenna effect sensitizing the electrochemiluminescence of bimetallic Ln-MOFs, we proposed Eu/Tb-MOFs with high luminescence intensity as a signal probe.

NaGdF:Ce,Eu,Tb nanocrystals were successfully prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method with Ce ions as sensitizers, Eu and Tb ions as activators, and polyethylenimine (PEI) as surfactants. Color-adjustable fluorescence emission was achieved by the energy transfer effect between rare earth ions. Blue fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CDs) with a double UV response under 254 nm and 365 nm excitation were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method.

Molecular lanthanide phosphonates [Ln (H tpmm) (H O) ] ⋅ xH O (Ln=Eu, EuP; Ln=Tb, TbP) were synthesized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction confirmed that EuP has a sandwich-like dinuclear structure, in which the Eu(III) center adopts a {EuO } distorted dodecahedral geometry. XRPD patterns prove that TbP and EuP are isomorphous and isostructural.
