Introduction: Onychomycosis are infections with a variety of etiological agents. Although dermatophytes are responsible for most infections, yeasts are gaining importance as agents of these pathologies. The use of antifungals has increased the incidence of what had been considered rare or novel pathogens. We reidentify three rare yeasts from a culture collection of onychomycosis agents by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight/mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/MS) and sequencing the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions or the intergenic spacer (IGS) 1 region of ribosomal DNA (rDNA), and present their enzymatic and antifungal susceptibility profiles.

Material And Methods: We performed a phenotypical characterization and molecular identification of five yeast isolates. We tested the urease, gelatinase, DNase, phospholipase, protease, and esterase activities, as well as the hemolytic activity. We evaluated the antifungal susceptibility to amphotericin B, fluconazole, anidulafungin and caspofungin.

Results: Phenotypic methods could not identify the isolates. MALDI-TOF/MS was able to properly identify Candida duobushameulonii. The five isolates were successfully identified by sequence analysis as Candida duobushaemulonii, Meyerozyma caribbica and Cutaneotrichosporon dermatis. Candida duobushameulonii showed hemolytic, phospholipase, and protease activities. Meyerozyma caribbica was positive for gelatinase and protease activities. All antifungals exhibited minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ≤2μg/mL against both species. The three isolates of Cutaneotrichosporon dermatis showed urease, DNase, and esterase activities, and resistance to echinocandins (MICs ≥8μg/mL), while amphotericin B and fluconazole exhibited low MICs against these isolates (0.50-2μg/mL).

Discussion: Sequencing of the ITS or IGS1 regions of rDNA remains the best method for identifying cryptic species over other commercially available systems. More reports are needed to define the enzymatic and antifungal profiles for these species. This is the first report of Meyerozyma caribbica and Cutaneotrichosporon dermatis as etiological agents of onychomycosis.

Fungal infections are serious complications after solid organ transplantation, with high mortality and morbidity. Given the importance of the local epidemiological data and also extensive prophylactic regimens in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients, this study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and resistance patterns of yeast isolates in SOT recipients at a main referral transplant center in Iran. Of the 275 recipients enrolled, 22 (8%) had at least one positive yeast culture at a median of 5 days after transplantation.

This study investigates the diverse fungal community and their probiotic functions present in ethnic fermented bamboo shoots of Arunachal Pradesh. Among 95 yeast isolates, 13 demonstrated notable probiotic attributes. These included growth at pH 3, bile tolerance, autoaggregation, co-aggregation, hydrophobicity, lysozyme tolerance and antimicrobial activity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the potential of yeasts from Brazilian native stingless bees to improve bioprocesses for producing biofuels, particularly ethanol and 2-phenylethanol.
  • Two yeast strains were isolated from the bees and excelled in fermenting sucrose with high efficiency, achieving over 90% and yields of 0.504 g/g, which is significant for the ethanol industry.
  • Experimental analyses indicated that these yeasts thrive under high sucrose concentrations and low pH, making them suitable for both ethanol and 2-phenylethanol production from inexpensive raw materials.

Probiotic and Functional Attributes of Yeasts Isolated from Different Traditional Fermented Foods and Products.

Probiotics Antimicrob Proteins

August 2024

Applied Mycology Lab, Department of Studies in Microbiology, University of Mysore, Mysuru, 570006, Karnataka, India.

Though numerous bacteria have been used as probiotics by industries, at present, Saccharomyces boulardii and Saccharomyces cerevesiae are the only yeast probiotics which are industrially exploited. In view of this, yeast probiotics were isolated from traditional fermented foods and products collected from different parts of Karnataka, India. In this work, we have studied the probiotic attributes of ten yeast isolates isolated from different traditionally fermented foods and products.
