Preparation and characterization of structural and antifouling properties of chitosan/polyethylene oxide membranes.

Int J Biol Macromol

October 2024

Bioengineering Laboratory, Department of Textile and Fibre Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi 110016, India. Electronic address:

It aims to prepare the chitosan (CS) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) hydrogel membranes with different CS/PEO blend ratios (100:0, 95:5, 90:10, 80:20 and 70:30) via solvent casting. The physicochemical properties of these membranes were investigated using various characterization techniques: Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), contact angle, and tensile testing. The interaction of PEO and chitosan was investigated by DSC in terms of freezing bound, freezing free, and non-freezing PEO fraction.

The extensive utilization of rubber-related products can lead to a substantial release of p-phenylenediamine (PPD) antioxidants into the environment. In recent years, studies mainly focus on the pollution characteristics and health risks of PM-bound PPDs. This study presents long-time scale data of PPDs and N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine quinone (6PPD-Q) in PM and proposes the innovative use of PPDs as new markers for vehicular emissions in the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) source apportionment.

Loosely Bounded Exciton with Enhanced Delocalization Capability Boosting Efficiency of Organic Solar Cells.

Small

November 2024

State Key Laboratory of Silicon and Advanced Semiconductor Materials, Department of Polymer Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, 310027, P. R. China.

In organic solar cells (OSCs), electron acceptors have undergone multiple updates, from the initial fullerene derivatives, to the later acceptor-donor-acceptor type non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs), and now to Y-series NFAs, based on which efficiencies have reached over 19%. However, the key property responsible for further improved efficiency from molecular structure design is remained unclear. Herein, the material properties are comprehensively scanned by selecting PCBM, IT-4F, and L8-BO as the representatives for different development stages of acceptors.

Is paper bag plastic-free, without plastic in colourful logo area?

J Hazard Mater

June 2024

Global Centre for Environmental Remediation (GCER), University of Newcastle, Callaghan, NSW 2308, Australia; CRC for Contamination Assessment and Remediation of the Environment (CRC CARE), University of Newcastle, Callaghan, NSW 2308, Australia.

The concern over plastic contamination has led to bans on plastic shopping bags, often replaced by paper ones. However, logos painted or printed on paper bags may still contain plastics, as investigated herein. In some logos, for example, white pigment of titanium dioxide (TiO) nanoparticles are bound with plastic binder onto the cellulose surface of the paper.
