Published: February 2021

Exciton diffusion lengths reaching the micrometer length scale have long been desired in solution-processed semiconductors but have remained unattainable using conventional materials to date. Now halide perovskite nanocrystal films show unprecedented exciton migration with diffusion lengths approaching 1 µm owing to the efficient combination of radiative and nonradiative energy transfer.

The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of an organic solar cell (OSC) mainly depends on the chemical structures and intrinsic properties of its active layer materials. The development of new nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) has significantly boosted the PCEs of OSCs over the last decade. Herein, two carbon-oxygen-bridged fused nonacyclic donor units were developed to synthesize two NFAs, namely TTPIC-Ar and iTTPIC-Ar, respectively.

Long-range exciton transport is crucial for optoelectronic devices based on organic semiconductors, but the method for increasing and regulating the exciton transport rate in organic semiconductors is still underexplored. Here we have achieved rapid-transporting excitons in organic crystals assembled of difluoroboron β-diketonate (BCZ) and found that the exciton transport rate of BCZ crystals can be regulated by the molecular packing form. Using transient absorption microscopy, we find that the BCZ-Y crystal in which BCZ molecules experience uniform head-to-tail antiparallel molecular packing has anisotropic long-range exciton transport.

Recent experiments have shown that exciton transport can be significantly enhanced through hybridization with confined photonic modes in a cavity. The light-matter hybridization generates exciton-polariton (EP) bands, whose group velocity is significantly larger than the excitons. Dissipative mechanisms that affect the constituent states of EPs, such as exciton-phonon coupling and cavity loss, have been observed to reduce the group velocities in experiments.

Thermal transport in nanostructures plays a critical role in modern technologies. As devices shrink, techniques that can measure thermal properties at nanometer and nanosecond scales are increasingly needed to capture transient, out-of-equilibrium phenomena. We present a novel pump-probe photon-electron method within a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) to map temperature dynamics with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolutions.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDCs) can be combined with organic semiconductors to form hybrid van der Waals heterostructures. Specially, non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) stand out due to their excellent absorption and exciton diffusion properties. Here, we couple monolayer tungsten diselenide (ML-WSe) with two well performing NFAs, ITIC, and IT-4F (fluorinated ITIC) to achieve hybrid architectures.
