A 7-year-old neutered female Domestic Short-haired cat was presented for evaluation of ulceration and severe vascularization of the left cornea. Ophthalmic examination revealed a large red irregular mass over the whole cornea in the left eye. A lamellar keratectomy was performed. Histopathology revealed a chronic lymphoplasmacytic, histocytic, neutrophilic ulcerative keratitis with fibrosis and vascularization. The tumor recurred within 3 months, and another lamellar keratectomy and sclerotomy were performed. The lesion was diagnosed histopathologically as a hemangiosarcoma with incomplete margins. The mass recurred locally 6 weeks later, and an enucleation was performed. Histopathology revealed infiltration of the limbus and connective tissue beyond the sclera. Seven weeks later, a fluctuant swelling was found in the left orbit. Computed tomography confirmed a soft tissue attenuating mass measuring 33 x 24 mm diameter in the orbit. There was no sign of metastasis. Clinical remission was achieved with combined chemotherapy with doxorubicin and radiation therapy. The patient remained in clinical remission 20 months post-chemotherapy.

This review analyzes the primary etiological factors of diffuse lamellar keratitis following various laser corneal refractive surgery techniques. The use of advanced diagnostic methods such as optical coherence tomography, confocal microscopy, and immunohistochemical methods has allowed for the identification of the main pathogenetic mechanisms underlying this condition, which will help improve the prevention, as well as assist with the development of optimal treatment strategies for this complication.

Collagen as the main structural component of the cornea exhibits unique and highly organized fibril lamellae, which contribute to the maintenance of corneal structure and transparency. Nevertheless, collagen assembly in vitro to create ideal artificial corneal substitutes with human cornea comparable thickness and optics is still limited. Here, glycerol as a regulator can reconcile collagen thickness, transparency, and permeability, a conflicting goal by current keratoprosthesis strategies.

Background: Corneal pathologies are among the most common reversible sight-threatening diseases globally. As such, corneal tissue transplantation (keratoplasty) techniques are evolving over time depending on the prevalence of different pathologies in each geographical area. We aim to provide a baseline information on the common keratoplasty procedures performed in our area in relation to prevalent corneal pathologies and to analyze common corneal surgical practice trends in our area.

Objective: To describe a case of presumed band keratopathy in a young cat with no known history of corneal disease who was not receiving topical phosphate-based steroids.
Animal Studied: A 10-month-old domestic shorthair cat was evaluated for severe ocular discomfort that did not improve despite the initiation of topical antibiotic treatment.
Methods: A complete ophthalmic examination and ancillary tests such as biomicroscopy and corneal cytology were performed at the time of presentation.
