A cross-sectional study of tobacco-smoking habits and its relationship to other coronary risk factors in a large rural community of 7,188 white subjects aged 15-64 years, revealed that 48.1% of the men and 17.9% of the women were currently smoking; only 28.6% men and 74.1% women had never smoked. Heavy smoking prevailed, with a mean daily consumption of 21.4 g and 14.6 g tobacco among male and female smokers respectively. Only 16.5% of male and 27.7% of female smokers smoked less than 10 g tobacco per day. Smoking was associated with a high total cholesterol level, a low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level, low blood pressure, a low body mass index, coronary-prone type A behaviour, and a high prevalence of coronary heart disease in men. Furthermore, smoking was associated with a high alcohol consumption and a low level of education and occupational class. These findings emphasise the high prevalence of smoking in whites and its harmful association with coronary heart disease, and indicate the need for effective anti-smoking programmes.

Purpose: Although lung cancer is one of the most common malignancies, the underlying genetics regarding susceptibility remain poorly understood. We characterized the spectrum of pathogenic/likely pathogenic (P/LP) germline variants within DNA damage response (DDR) genes among lung cancer cases and controls in non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs) and African Americans (AAs).
Materials And Methods: Rare, germline variants in 67 DDR genes with evidence of pathogenicity were identified using the ClinVar database.

Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and cigarettes are addictive substances and addictive substances are often related in consumption with each other. However, the potential interdependence between SSB and cigarette consumption has not been explored in the literature. As SSB and cigarette consumption have posed a great threat to individual health, the knowledge of such interdependence is critical for policymakers to design and coordinate government interventions.

Rates of respiratory tract infections for children living in remote First Nations communities in the Sioux Lookout Zone in Northwestern Ontario are elevated and associated with poor indoor environmental quality including high exposures to endotoxin and serious dampness and mould damage. The studies also revealed a high prevalence of cigarette smoking and most houses have wood stoves, of variable quality. Depending on structure, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are carcinogens, immunotoxins and/or inflammatory mediators that are byproducts of the incomplete combustion of organic materials.

Background: Sex differences in lung cancer survival are well-established, but the gap between Faroese men and women is especially pronounced. Faroese women have some of the highest 1- and 5-year relative survival rates in the Nordic region, while Faroese men have some of the lowest. This study investigates these survival disparities by analyzing demographic, clinical, and temporal factors in Faroese lung cancer patients from 2015 to 2020.

Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability globally, particularly in China. Identifying risk factors for stroke at an early stage is critical to improving patient outcomes and reducing the overall disease burden. However, the complexity of stroke risk factors requires advanced approaches for accurate prediction.
