Monitoring of the Local Extracellular Environment Using Chiral Gold Nanoparticles.

J Am Chem Soc

CIC biomaGUNE, Basque Research and Technology Alliance (BRTA), Donostia-San Sebastián 20014, Spain.

In three-dimensional (3D)-printed tissue models, sensitive, noninvasive techniques are required to detect changes in hydrogel structure caused by cellular remodeling. We demonstrate herein that circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy provides a reliable method for detecting hydrogel structural variations. We probe directly the plasmonic optical activity of chiral gold nanorods (c-AuNRs) embedded within the hydrogel matrix, in response to variations in the local environment.

Life has existed on Earth for most of the planet's history, yet major gaps and unresolved questions remain about how it first arose and persisted. Early Earth posed numerous challenges for life, including harsh and fluctuating environments. Today, many organisms cope with such conditions by entering a reversible state of reduced metabolic activity, a phenomenon known as dormancy.

Viruses, known for causing widespread biological harm and even extinction, pose significant challenges to public health. Virus detection is crucial for accurate disease diagnosis and preventing the spread of infections. Recently, the outstanding analytical performance of CRISPR/Cas biosensors has shown great potential and they have been considered as augmenting methods for reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), which was the gold standard for nucleic acid detection.

UV-vis spectroscopy is a workhorse in analytical chemistry that finds application in life science, organic synthesis, and energy technologies like photocatalysis. In its traditional implementation with cuvettes, it requires sample volumes in the milliliter range. Here, we show how nanofluidic scattering spectroscopy (NSS), which measures visible light scattered from a single nanochannel in a spectrally resolved way, can reduce this sample volume to the attoliter range for solute concentrations in the mM regime, which corresponds to as few as 10 probed molecules.

To battle seasonal outbreaks of influenza B virus infection, which continue to pose a major threat to world health, new and improved vaccines are urgently needed. In this article, we discuss the current state of next-generation influenza B vaccine development, including both advancements and challenges. This review covers the shortcomings of existing influenza vaccines and stresses the need for more-effective and broadly protective vaccines and more-easily scalable manufacturing processes.
