A tale of two alginates.

Background: All fibrous wound dressings are considered to have the same action and value to the support of wound healing. Although clear distinction has been accepted between cotton gauze and calcium alginates, there is still no formally recognised distinction between calcium alginates and the more rapidly gelling fibre dressings.

Method: Scientific and clinical evaluations were used to differentiate two different fibrous wound care products. One is derived from polymer extraction of algae (alginate dressings); the other has been manufactured from a uniquely patented carboxymethylation process that produces 100% carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based dressings. Structural differences between these dressings were evaluated with respect to three important areas of wound care management: optimal wound moisture control; the ability to reduce risk of complication by locking away harmful components (e.g. bacteria); and reducing the overall cost of wound care by promoting more efficient use of nursing time.

Results: Clear differentiation was illustrated through both scientific and clinical evaluations.

Conclusion: This study supports the potential advantages of using a technically advanced fibrous wound dressing over the traditional fibrous alginate wound care product.

Right coronary sinus of Valsalva pseudoaneurysm after a motorcycle accident: A case report.

Medicine (Baltimore)

January 2025

Department of Radiology, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan, China.

Rationale: Traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the sinus of Valsalva (PSV) is a rare but life-threatening condition, often resulting from blunt chest trauma. Rapid progress and a high risk of rupture highlight the importance of prompt diagnosis and intervention. We present a case of a rare pseudoaneurysm linked to the right coronary sinus after blunt chest trauma.

Background: This study evaluates the efficacy of a novel bismuth subgallate-borneol compound ointment as an adjuvant therapy in promoting postoperative healing of infectious incisions after anorectal surgery.

Methods: From June 2023 to October 2023, 46 patients with perianal abscess and anal fistula treated at our institution's Anorectal Surgery Department were enrolled in this prospective randomized controlled study. Patients were randomly allocated into 2 groups: the experimental group (n = 23) received conventional wound care plus a proprietary ointment containing 4.

Rationale: Local anesthesia is a widely used technique for emergency wound closure, with lidocaine among the most commonly employed local anesthetics. Allergic reactions to lidocaine are rare, with anaphylaxis being even more uncommon.

Patient Concerns And Diagnosis: This report describes a 72-year-old male patient who presented with a right foot injury and underwent wound suturing under lidocaine local anesthesia.

Impact of under-assisted ventilation on diaphragm function and structure in a porcine model.

Anesthesiology

January 2025

Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine B (DAR B), Saint-Eloi Hospital, University Teaching Hospital of Montpellier, 80 avenue Augustin Fliche, 34295 Montpellier, France.

Background: Long-term controlled mechanical ventilation (CMV) in intensive care unit (ICU) induces ventilatory-induced-diaphragm-dysfunction (VIDD). The transition from CMV to assisted mechanical ventilation is a challenge that requires clinicians to balance over-assistance and under-assistance. While the effects of over-assistance on the diaphragm are well known, we aimed to assess the impact of under-assistance on diaphragm function and structure in piglet model with pre-existing VIDD (after long-term CMV) or without VIDD (short-term CMV).
