A game bird producer in the North Central region of the United States submitted unhatched ring-neck pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) eggs for diagnostic evaluation. The submitting complaint was a drastic drop in hatchability. This operation has its own breeder birds that are housed in outside pens. This hatch occurred in the latter third of the production cycle. Typical hatchability for this operation is around 75% (± 3%). The hatchability of this hatch was between 14%-15%. Approximately 30,000 eggs were set with an expected hatchability of about 23,000 birds. The number of birds from this hatch was less than 4500, with a net loss approaching 20,000 chicks. All unhatched eggs submitted were in late stage development. The chick embryos had pipped through the shell but died before hatching. Approximately 5000 eggs originating from an outside breeder source were also set at the same time in the same machines and experienced a normal hatch. The exterior surfaces of the eggshells of the unhatched eggs experiencing low hatchability were swabbed and submitted for bacteriologic evaluation. Additionally, embryos from some of the unhatched eggs were removed aseptically from their eggshells, and their internal organs were harvested and submitted for bacteriologic evaluation. The bacteriology results identified no pathogenic bacteria from the eggshells. However, the embryo samples revealed large quantities of Enterococcus faecalis. In discussions with the producer, the only factor identified was an unusually warm period followed by an atypically cold and wet period during the time of egg collection for those eggs experiencing low hatchability.

Aiming to address the issue of stored grain pests easily breeding during the process of dried fruits in Xinjiang, this study proposes a method and a device for killing raisin parasitic eggs based on a high-voltage pulsed electric field. A one-way test and a Box-Behnken central combination test were conducted to investigate the effects of high-voltage pulsed electric field strength and frequency on the unhatched rate and larval survival rate of Plodia interpunctella eggs on raisin surfaces. The experimental results were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed using biooptical microscope observation and incubation at constant temperature and humidity post-treatment.

This study aimed to analyze the applicability of three different indices to evaluate the reproductive capacity of engorged females (RCEF). The indices, RCEF, RCEF and RCEF, were proposed as alternative to the count of the exact number of unhatched eggs and larvae in in vivo and in vitro acaricide efficacy trials that involve the use of engorged females to estimate the effect of a drug on their reproductive capacity. Time trends and regional differences of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and -furans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), DDTs, polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) and polybrominated diphenylethers (BDEs) were studied in unhatched osprey eggs collected by bird ringers in 1972-2017 from four areas in Finland. Two study areas were from Baltic Sea, Northern Quark and Finnish Archipelago Sea, while the two others were inland lake areas, eutrophicated Lake Vanajanselkä affected by industrial emissions, and Pristine SW Lake Area. The highest concentrations of most compound groups were in Lake Vanajanselkä consistent with high emissions, the predominance of bream as a prey, and higher concentrations in bream compared to other prey fish.
