Homoeologic aberrations in human and chimpanzee Y chromosomes: inverted and satellited Y chromosomes.

Cytogenet Cell Genet

Institut für Humangenetik und Anthropologie, Universität Freiburg, Federal Republic of Germany.

Published: May 1988

An inverted and a satellited Y chromosome detected in peripheral blood lymphocytes of a chimpanzee and a pygmy chimpanzee, respectively, were characterized cytogenetically by various banding techniques. A detailed comparison with an inverted and a satellited Y chromosome in man suggested that the corresponding aberrations were homoeologic.

Objective: To delineate the origin and structure of 3 cases of small supernumerary marker chromosomes (sSMCs) through cytogenetic and molecular genetic analysis.

Methods: Conventional G, C and N banding were carried out to analyze the chromosomal karyotypes. Chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) were used to delineate the origin and structure of the sSMCs.

Trisomy Xp and partial tetrasomy Xq resulting from gain of a rearranged X chromosome in a female fetus: pathogenic or not?

Mol Cytogenet

July 2015

Department of Laboratory Medicine, University of California, San Francisco. 185 Berry Street, Suite# 290, Campus Box 0134, San Francisco, CA 94107 USA.

Cytogenetic analysis of chorionic villous sampling revealed a mosaic karyotype with gain of a rearranged X chromosome. Microarray and additional studies indicated that the rearranged X carried an inverted duplication, a deletion and a satellited Xqter. Gain of this rearranged X was confirmed by follow-up amniocentesis and postnatal cord blood sample.

An inverted and satellited Y chromosome of almost acrocentric appearance was detected in seven of 14 male orangutans. In the remaining seven animals a submetacentric Y chromosome without NORs occurred. The high frequency with which the satellited Y chromosomes were associated with acrocentric autosomes and the positive AgNO3-staining of their satellite stalks clearly indicate the active state of the NOR on the Y chromosomes.
