Brain injury represents the leading cause of mortality and disability after cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) from cardiac arrest (CA), in which the accumulation of dying cells aggravate tissue injury by releasing proinflammatory intracellular components. Microglia play an essential role in maintaining brain homeostasis via milk fat globule epidermal growth factor 8 (MFG-E8)-opsonized efferocytosis, the engulfment of dying cells and debris. This study investigates whether potentiating microglia efferocytosis by MFG-E8 provides neuroprotection after CA/CPR.

Peripheral inflammation is closely related to the pathogenesis of sickness behaviors and psychiatric disorders such as anxiety and depression. The circumventricular organs (CVOs) are important brain sites to perceive peripheral inflammatory signals, but few studies have reported their role in inflammation-induced anxiety or depression. Using a mouse model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation, we identified a previously unreported role of the subfornical organ (SFO), one of the CVOs, in combating inflammation-induced anxiety.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by dopamine (DA) neuronal dysfunction. Although DA agonists and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonists are used to treat PD, chronic use causes severe side effects. Puerarin (PUE) is a natural bioactive compound that affects the DA system; however, its effect on PD-associated motor functions is unknown.

Inflammasome activation is implicated in diseases of aberrant angiogenesis such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), though its precise role in choroidal neovascularization (CNV), a characteristic pathology of advanced AMD, is ill-defined. Reports on inhibition of inflammasome constituents on CNV are variable and the precise role of inflammasome in mediating pathological angiogenesis is unclear. Historically, subretinal injection of inflammasome agonists alone has been used to investigate retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) degeneration, while the laser photocoagulation model has been used to study pathological angiogenesis in a model of CNV.
