Microplastic (MP) particles are pollutants of global concern and are ubiquitously distributed in the ocean by physical and biological processes. It has been shown that zooplankton can ingest MP yet the interaction between ciliates and MP is still poorly understood. The discrimination and preferential uptake of MP rather than algal prey by ciliates was assessed in this study. The ciliate Sterkiella sp. was fed a diet that consisted of only Isochrysis galbana or a mixture of the same algae and similarly sized polyethylene beads in a 1:3 ratio. Significant, preferential MP grazing was observed in the Plastic-Algae treatment, which is the first reported evidence of proto-zooplankton preferentially ingesting MP over algal food. The mixed treatment contained fecal pellets with embedded MP. Preferential uptake of MP suggests that Sterkiella sp. is capable of ingesting and then "repackaging" MP that would otherwise be too small for larger taxa. This process would thus offer a mechanism for the reintroduction of MP into different compartments of the marine food web. As a consequence, it is necessary to account for small-sized MP (<5 μm) particles, that may have additional and yet unknown, impacts on marine food webs.

Functionalization and volatilization are competing reactions during the oxidation of carbonaceous materials and are important processes in many different areas of science and technology. Here, we present a combined ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS) and grazing incidence X-ray scattering (GIXS) investigation of the oxidation of oleic acid ligands surrounding NaYF nanoparticles (NPs) deposited onto SiO/Si substrates. While APXPS monitors the evolution of the oxidation products, GIXS provides insight into the morphology of the ligands and particles before and after the oxidation.

Herein, quasi-two-dimensional (Q-2D) (PEA)MAPbI (prepared by a two-step process) and hole transport layer of a solar cell were fabricated in a high relative humidity (25 ± 5%) environment. The PSC behavior of most Q-2D perovskites is worse than that of three-dimensional perovskites owing to the horizontal alignment of the innate characteristic organic plates on the substrate. Using hybrid immersion solvents (HISs), we have improved vertical alignment in an appropriate ratio to enhance the efficiency of charge transfer and the high coverage of the first priming layer (first step).

Grazing livestock in grasslands face the challenge of obtaining sufficient nutrition due to uneven distribution of plant species and fluctuating vegetation productivity and nutrient levels. In northern China, and are the dominant perennial species in native grasslands, but they provide limited nutrition compared to forbs with higher crude protein (CP) content. While dietary ingredients can affect the nutritional intake of grazing livestock, the influence of different grazing strategies on dietary selection remains unclear.

The gyroid structure from self-assembly is highly attractive for optical applications such as photonic crystals and metamaterials. However, due to the direction-dependent nature of these applications, achieving a monograin-level structure over a large area has remained challenging. In this study, the fabrication of unidirectionally oriented anisotropic nanocylinders of polystyrene-block-polydimethylsiloxane (PS-b-PDMS) is reported block copolymer thin films up to a 4-inch scale via a shear-rolling process, followed by solvent annealing to induce phase transition to nearly monograin gyroid structures.
