VO is a highly correlated electron system which has a metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) with a dramatic change of conductivity accompanied by a first-order structural phase transition (SPT) near room temperature. The origin of the MIT is still controversial and there is ongoing debate over whether an SPT induces the MIT and whether the T can be engineered using artificial parameters. We examined the electrical and local structural properties of Cr- and Co-ion implanted VO (Cr-VO and Co-VO) films using temperature-dependent resistance and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements at the V K edge. The temperature-dependent electrical resistance measurements of both Cr-VO and Co-VO films showed sharp MIT features. The T values of the Cr-VO and Co-VO films first decreased and then increased relative to that of pristine VO as the ion flux was increased. The pre-edge peak of the V K edge from the Cr-VO films with a Cr ion flux ≥ 10 ions/cm showed no temperature-dependent behavior, implying no changes in the local density of states of V 3d t and e orbitals during MIT. Extended XAFS (EXAFS) revealed that implanted Cr and Co ions and their tracks caused a substantial amount of structural disorder and distortion at both vanadium and oxygen sites. The resistance and XAFS measurements revealed that VO experiences a sharp MIT when the distance of V-V pairs undergoes an SPT without any transitions in either the VO octahedrons or the V 3d t and e states. This indicates that the MIT of VO occurs with no changes of the crystal fields.

Objective: To evaluate actual myocardial energy requirements using indirect calorimetry, oxygen delivery (DO), oxygen extraction ratio (OER), cardiac output (CO) and their components, as well as to study the impact of positive inotropic agent (dobutamine) on myocardial metabolism in early postoperative period after cardiac surgery.
Material And Methods: We measured the main metabolic parameters using indirect calorimetry in 20 patients after on-pump cardiac surgery with cardioplegia. To evaluate the impact of metabolic load on CO, VO and DO, we administered dobutamine 3 µg/kg/min at the second phase of the study.

Introduction: Although the major limitation to exercise performance in patients with COPD is dynamic hyperinflation (DH), little is known about its relation with cardiac response to exercise. Our objectives were to compare the exercise response of stroke volume (SV) and cardiac output (CO) between COPD patients with or without DH and control subjects, and to assess the main determinants.
Methods: Fifty-seven stable COPD patients without cardiac comorbidity and 25 healthy subjects were recruited.

Complex nanostructures with distinct spatial architectures and more active sites hold broad prospects in new energy conversion fields. Herein, a facile strategy was carried out to construct triple-shelled Co-VSe nanocages, starting with an ion-exchange process between Co-based zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) nanopolyhedrons and VO followed by the formation of triple-shelled Co-VSe hollow nanocages during the process of increasing the solvothermal temperature under the assistance of SeO. Meanwhile, triple-shelled Co-VS and yolk-double shell Co-VO nanocages were fabricated as references by a similar process.
