seeds are wildly used in the food and medicine industry. It has been found that 4'--methylpyridoxine (MPN) is responsible for the poisoning caused by seeds. The objective of this study was to explore and optimize the extraction method of MPN from seeds, and investigate its toxic effect on human gastric epithelial cells (GES-1) and the potential related mechanisms. The results showed that the extraction amount of MPN was 1.933 μg/mg, when extracted at 40 °C for 100 min, with the solid-liquid ratio at 1:10. MPN inhibited the proliferation of GES-1 cells, for which the inhibition rate was 38.27% when the concentration of MPN was 100 μM, and the IC value was 127.80 μM; meanwhile, the cell cycle was arrested in G2 phase. High concentration of MPN (100 μM) had significant effects on the nucleus of GES-1 cells, and the proportion of apoptotic cells reached 43.80%. Furthermore, the Western blotting analysis showed that MPN could reduce mitochondrial membrane potential by increasing the expression levels of apoptotic proteins Caspase 8 and Bax in GES-1 cells. In conclusion, MPN may induce apoptosis in GES-1 cells, which leads to toxicity in the human body.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: The dried fruit of Crataegus pinnatifida Bunge (Hawthorn in Chinese) is a traditional medicine used in China, Japan and Korea for thousands of years. Hawthorn is documented in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, as a folk medicine that is used to eliminate food, strengthen the stomach, move qi and dissipate blood stasis, treat stagnation of meat and food, gastric distention and fullness, and has anti-inflammatory effects. Vitexin, a flavonoid glycoside, is an important biologically active compound derived from Hawthorn, with significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Anaerobic digestion of food waste is increasingly utilized for bioenergy generation, producing a byproduct known as food waste digestate (FWD), which has potential applications as a fertilizer within the circular economy. However, accumulating numerous pollutants in FWD poses significant challenges to environmental management and human health. The complex nature of these pollutants complicates both targeted and non-targeted chemical analyses, making safety evaluations difficult.

Article Synopsis
  • Polyphenols, especially resveratrol (RV), have been studied for their ability to neutralize harmful aldehydes like formaldehyde (FA) and acrolein (ACR), but there is limited research on how they deal with multiple aldehydes at once.
  • The study shows that RV can effectively scavenge both FA and ACR by forming adducts, particularly the RV-ACR (RA) and RV-ACR-FA (RAF) adducts, which dominate the reaction.
  • The findings also indicate that these adducts are less toxic to gastrointestinal cell lines than the original harmful aldehydes, suggesting RV could be a useful dietary supplement for food safety by reducing aldehyde toxicity in foods

The State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine Key Laboratory of Toxic Pathogens-Based Therapeutic Approaches of Gastric Cancer, Yangzhou University, 136 Jiangyang Avenue, Building 41, Room 301, Yangzhou, 225009, Jiangsu, China.

Background And Aims: Previous studies have demonstrated that peptidylarginine deiminase 4 (PAD4) functions as a suppressor, promoter, or both in cancer pathogenesis and therapeutic outcomes. Although PAD4 expression has been proposed to be one of the molecular features of gastric cancer (GC), the biological basis of PAD4 in GC progression and chemotherapy has not been formally established.

Methods: Cell type-preferential expression of PAD4 was analyzed in both preclinical and clinical models.

Chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) is a prevalent form of chronic gastritis that presents with chronic inflammation of the gastric mucosa, localised gastric mucosal glandular atrophy and intestinal metaplasia. Despite the existence of diagnostic criteria, effective therapeutic strategies for this condition remain to be developed. The objective of this study was to examine the potential therapeutic benefits of epiberberine in mitigating MNNG-induced CAG and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms.
