Rediviva neliana Cockerell 1931 has been considered to be widely distributed along the southeastern and eastern Escarpment of South Africa and Lesotho, with high variation in foreleg length recorded across populations. A recent analysis of the allometric relationship between foreleg length and body size for the oil-collecting species of Rediviva revealed that R. neliana is a notable 'outlier', suggesting that it represented a group of species and not a single taxon.

A hidden lethal effect of long microplastic fibres on the coastal copepod Acartia erythraea.

Mar Pollut Bull

November 2024

International Institute of Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences (I-AQUAS), Universiti Putra Malaysia, Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia.

Article Synopsis
  • * In lab tests, starving copepods actively ingested pieces of the microplastic, which caused the fibers to penetrate deep into their digestive systems.
  • * All copepods with the fibers in their mouths died within 24 hours, indicating that even a single piece of microplastic can have a lethal impact on marine life due to its non-degradable nature.
