Background: Docetaxel (DTX) is widely used to treat many malignant tumors but has many adverse effects. Curcumin (CUR) also has effects on a variety of tumor cells and can reduce the toxicity and side effects of chemotherapy drugs and the occurrence of drug resistance. However, the combination of CUR and DTX for treating esophageal cancer has not been reported.

Methods: Human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) KYSE150 and KYSE510 cells were treated with CUR or DTX alone or both drugs and cancer cell viability was detected by CCK8, apoptosis, scratch-healing and migration assays. Electron microscopy and Western blots were used. experiments were used observe anti-tumor effects.

Results: CUR combined with DTX significantly inhibited the viability and migration of esophageal cancer cells (P<0.01) and further promoted the apoptosis of cancer cells. In addition, CUR induced autophagy in esophageal cancer cells when combined with DTX. DTX combined with CUR may induce apoptosis and autophagy by inhibiting the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. The compound 3-methyladenine (3MA) inhibited the autophagy induced by DTX and CUR (DC), further accelerated apoptosis and inhibited the proliferation of esophageal cancer cells when combined with DC.

Conclusion: CUR combined with DTX induced apoptosis and autophagy of ESCC and probably worked through the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. The combination of the autophagy inhibitor, CUR and DTX may become a new treatment strategy for esophageal cancer.

PrPc is expressed in various tumors and is associated with cancer progression, but previous studies have shown conflicting results regarding its relationship with patient prognosis-potentially due to differences in the antibodies used. This study aimed to clarify the relationship between PrPc expression and primary esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using a novel anti-PrPc antibody, 4AA-m, noted for its high specificity and sensitivity. We used flow cytometry to detect PrPc expression in ESCC and HCC cell lines.

Tumor cell nuclear size (NS) indicates malignant potential in breast cancer; however, its clinical significance in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is unknown. Artificial intelligence (AI) can quantitatively evaluate histopathological findings. The aim was to measure NS in ESCC using AI and elucidate its clinical significance.

Background: Immunochemotherapy is inevitably accompanied with treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs). However, TRAEs are typically assessed at a single time point, overlooking the complexity of TRAE trajectories over time. This study aimed to characterize TRAE trajectories during multi-cycle neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy (nICT) and identify potential prognostic factors for patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).

Background: The Inflammatory burden Index (IBI) is an effective predictor for a range of malignancies. However, the significance of IBI in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) needs to be further verified. The aim of this study was to verify the predictive power of IBI in ESCC undergoing radical resection.

Radiotherapy resistance is one of the main reasons for the dismal clinical outcome of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Therefore, clarifying the targets and molecular mechanisms of radiotherapy resistance in ESCC is of great theoretical and clinical significance to enhance the efficacy of radiotherapy. In this study, GPR37 was identified as a key factor facilitating ESCC radiosensitization.
