Artificial cascade reactions involving biocatalysts have demonstrated a tremendous potential during the recent years. This review just focuses on selected examples of the last year and putting them into context to a previously published suggestion for classification. Subdividing the cascades according to the number of catalysts in the linear sequence, and classifying whether the steps are performed simultaneous or in a sequential fashion as well as whether the reaction sequence is performed or allows to organise the concepts. The last year showed, that combinations of as well as are possible. Incompatible reaction steps may be run in a sequential fashion or by compartmentalisation of the incompatible steps either by using special reactors (membrane), polymersomes or flow techniques.

As a result of the current high throughput of the fast fashion collections and the concomitant decrease in product lifetime, we are facing enormous amounts of textile waste. Since textiles are often a blend of multiple fibers (predominantly cotton and polyester) and contain various different components, proper waste management and recycling are challenging. Here, we describe a high-yield process for the sequential chemical recycling of cotton and polyester from mixed waste textiles.

A wearable detector to monitor visible light intensity is realized by the restrained photochromism of a hydrogel composite containing light-responsive spiropyran with hydroxyl groups (SPOH). When exposed to visible light, the SPOH experiences a ring-opening to a ring-closed transition accompanied by discoloration from red to yellow. Unlike in the solution, the photochromism/discoloration rate is strongly correlated to the cross-linking points.

Background: The fluorescent dye indocyanine green (ICG) has been used to identify anatomical structures intraoperatively in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using ICG to assess graft patency and territorial distribution of myocardial reperfusion during CABG.
Methods: Porcine arrested hearts (n = 18) were used to evaluate territorial distribution of native coronary arteries and of a coronary bypass constructed with porcine saphenous vein graft (SVG) using ICG.

Technological innovation can drive scientific inquiry by allowing researchers to answer questions that were once out of reach. Eukaryotic mRNA synthesis was not so long ago thought of as a deterministic, sequential process in which transcriptional regulators and general transcription factors assemble in an orderly fashion into chromatin to, ultimately, activate RNA polymerase II. Advances in fluorescence microscopy techniques have revealed a much more complex scenario, wherein transcriptional regulators dynamically engage with chromatin in a more stochastic, probabilistic way.
