This paper details the development of a lab-made experimental setup for surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS) measurements using an open-source and Arduino microcontroller to control a monochromator and some off-the-shelf electronic components. The experimental setup is interfaced to a computer, where LabVIEW based software manages system control and data acquisition. We also report the design of a compact sample holder, simple and easy to manufacture and handle. Results of the application of SPS to the characterization of MoO thin films and semiconductor laser structures are presented to validate the performance of the setup, highlighting the effectiveness of SPS for the characterization of semiconductor materials and devices.

Gold (Au) nanoclustersare promising photocatalysts for biomedicine, sensing, and environmental remediation. However, the short carrier lifetime, inherent instability, and unclear charge transfer mechanism hinder their application. Herein, the Au nanoclusters decorated with three different isomers of o-Aminophenol, m-Aminophenol, and p-Aminophenol are synthesized, namely o-Au, m-Au, and p-Au, which achieve efficient hydrogen peroxide (HO) photoproduction through two-step one-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR).

Plasmonic resonance intensity in metallic nanostructures plays a crucial role in charge generation and separation, directly affecting plasmon-induced photocatalytic activity. Engineering strategies to enhance plasmonic effects involve designing specific nanostructures, such as triangular nanoplates with sharp corners or dimer nanostructures with hot spots. However, these approaches often lead to a trade-off between enhanced plasmonic intensity and resonance energy, which ultimately determines local charge density and photocatalytic performance.

Atomic-layer-deposited (ALD) "leaky" TiO has gained interest as a charge-selective protection layer for semiconductor solar fuel electrodes. Here, the use of sputter-deposited TiO layers as hole-selective contacts for WO/CuWO type-2 heterojunction water oxidation photoanodes is demonstrated for the first time. TiO protection layers with varying thicknesses (2 to 128 nm) were deposited by using the radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering technique.

Coupling hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with biomass valorization using a photoelectrochemical (PEC) system presents a promising approach for effectively converting solar energy to chemical energy. A crucial biomass valorization reaction is the production of value-added 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) via 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) oxidation reaction (HMFOR). To achieve efficient FDCA production, we demonstrate an effective photoanode strategy that combines metal silicidation, dopant segregation, and surface reconstruction to create a bimetallic silicide NiPtSi/n-Si photoanode.

Charge transport and metal site stability play a critical role on realizing efficient solar water splitting in photoelectrochemical devices. Here, we investigated BiVO-based composite photoanodes (labelled as NF@PTA/2PACz/BVO) in which BiVO, [2-(9H-carbazol-9-yl) ethyl] phosphonic acid (2PACz) hole transport layers based on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), and terephthalic acid (PTA)-functionalized NiFeOOH (NF@PTA) oxygen evolution cocatalysts (OECs) structurally similar to the OECs in natural photosystem II, were assembled sequentially. Alignment of energy levels and stabilization of metal sites can be achieved by this layer-designed structure.
