Intestinal hypoganglionosis is a rare condition in adults. We report a case of intestinal hypoganglionosis in the mid-distal transverse colon to splenic flexure in a 65-year-old female patient presenting with altered bowel habit and abdominal distension, and reviewed the current literature on this topic. Our patient had a medical history of neurofibromatosis type 1. A preoperative computed tomography (CT) scan demonstrated a grossly dilated transverse colon without obstruction. A laparotomy for subtotal colectomy was performed, with histopathology demonstrating intestinal hypoganglionosis.

Background: Hypoganglionosis resembles Hirschsprung disease (HSCR) which is characterized by severe constipation. Enterocolitis due to hypoganglionosis or Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis (HAEC) is a life-threatening complication of both diseases. This study investigated the role of Paneth-like cells (PLCs) and gut microbiota in the development of enterocolitis in an iatrogenic rectosigmoid hypoganglionosis rat model.

Objective: In living tissue, it has been difficult to make microscopic-level observations without damaging the tissue.

Summary Background Data: We have invented a novel intravital fluorescent observation method (IFOM) for real-time tissue observation, combining multi-photon laser scanning microscopy (MPLSM) with curcumin vital staining (CVS-IFOM). The aim of this study was to use CVS-IFOM to analyze the enteric nervous system (ENS) in mice and human patients with hypoganglionosis and Hirschsprung disease.

Probiotics are generally considered safe and used to improve intestinal function. Here, we report a Lacticaseibacillus paracasei bacteremia case in an 8-month-old girl administered probiotics containing L. paracasei after jejunostomy for hypoganglionosis.

Article Synopsis
  • * Fourteen patients were analyzed, showing types of IMD such as isolated hypoganglionosis, extensive aganglionosis, and chronic idiopathic intestinal pseudo-obstruction, with a notable 50% mortality rate primarily due to intestinal failure-related liver disease and catheter infections.
  • * Cholestasis emerged as a significant predictor of prognosis, highlighting the need to focus on preventing complications like liver disease and infections from long-term TPN to ultimately reduce mortality rates in these patients.

Isolated hypoganglionosis (IHG) is histologically characterized by small numbers of myenteric ganglion cells and small myenteric ganglia; however, no numerical diagnostic criteria for IHG have been established. Therefore, this study aimed to develop quantitative pathologic criteria for IHG. We evaluated 160 resected intestinal tissue specimens from 29 pediatric autopsies and 10 IHG cases.
