Synthesis of ZnO/Au Nanorods for Self Cleaning Applications. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a well-known semiconductor with valuable characteristics: wide direct band gap of ˜3.3 eV, large exciton binding energy of 60 meV at room temperature, high efficient photocatalyst, etc. which have been applied in many fields such as optical devices (LEDs, laser), solar cells and sensors. Besides, various low dimensional structures of ZnO in terms of nanoparticles, nanorods, nanoneedles, nanotetrapods find applications in technology and life. This material is also appealing due to the diversity of available processing methods including both chemical and physical approaches such as: hydrothermal, sol-gel, chemical vapor deposition and sputtering. In this report, ZnO nanorods are prepared by hydrothermal method assisted with galvanic-cell effect. The effect of counter electrode materials on the morphology and structure of obtained product was studied. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the product showed that counter electrodes made of aluminum offers nanorods of higher quality than other materials in terms of uniform size, high density and good preferred orientation. The as-prepared nanorods were then sputtered with gold (Au). ZnO/Au nanostructures show excellent photocatalyst activities which were demonstrated by complete photodegradation of methylene blue (Mb) under UV irradiation and high decomposition rate k of 0.011 min.

Redefining the Role of Cobalt Oxide in Ethane Dehydroaromatization: Insights into Enhanced Catalytic Activity and Stability.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

December 2024

Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Korea University, 145 Anam-ro, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul 02841, Republic of Korea.

Cobalt is recognized as an active catalyst in ethane dehydroaromatization (EDA) reactions due to its efficient ethane cracking capability. In order to optimize cobalt's strong ethane cracking capability, it was loaded onto HZSM-5 zeolite through impregnation. This study was conducted with Co-loaded HZSM-5 catalysts with an incipient wetness impregnation method and witnessed an increase of catalytic activity with a long induction period.

Self-assembling cyclic peptide nanotubes are fascinating supramolecular systems with promising potential for various applications, such as drug delivery, transmembrane ionic channels, and artificial light-harvesting systems. In this study, we present novel pH-responsive nanotubes based on asymmetric cyclic peptide-polymer conjugates. The pH response is introduced by a tertiary amine-based polymer, poly(dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate) (pDMAEMA) or poly(diethylamino ethyl methacrylate) (pDEAEMA) which is protonated at low pH.

Catalytic pyrolysis of oxygen-containing waste polycarbonate for the preparation of carbon nanotubes and H-rich syngas.

Waste Manag

December 2024

School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Tianjin University, Tianjin 300072, China; Tianjin Key Lab of Biomass/waste Utilization, Tianjin Engineering Research Center for Organic Wastes Safe Disposal and Energy Utilization, Tianjin 300072, China. Electronic address:

In this study, ex-situ catalytic pyrolysis of oxygen-containing polycarbonate (PC) was conducted to prepare carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and H-rich syngas. This study examined the influence of the active metal components (Ni and Fe), catalyst pre-reduction, and pre-deoxygenation of pyrolysis volatiles on the catalytic performance and mechanism. Results show that the reductive constituents in pyrolysis volatiles make it difficult to reduce the Fe oxides, thus hindering the CNTs growth on Fe catalysts, compared to Ni catalysts.

Sustainable High-Performance Structural Materials from Micro/nanostructured Corn Stover.

Nano Lett

December 2024

Department of Chemistry, New Cornerstone Science Laboratory, Institute of Biomimetic Materials & Chemistry, Anhui Engineering Laboratory of Biomimetic Materials, Division of Nanomaterials & Chemistry, Hefei National Research Center for Physical Sciences at the Microscale, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei 230026, China.

Corn stover, as an abundant agricultural residue, has not been well reutilized due to the lack of efficient utilization methods. Based on micro/nanoscale structure design of corn stover, we report an environmentally friendly strategy to prepare micro/nanostructured corn stover-based building blocks. Then, through the directed deformation assembly approach, a high value-added corn stover structural material (CSSM) that with higher strength and more excellent thermal stability than most widely used plastics and wood-plastic composites can be prepared.
