Nitrosyl metal complexes (M-NO), in which nitrosyl ligands are coordinated to transition-metal ions, have been studied from the viewpoints of physiological activity, catalytic activity, and photosensitivity. The structural flexibility and electric polarization of the nitrosyl ligand are attractive characteristics. Herein we show a photoswitchable nonlinear-optical (NLO) crystal based on a dysprosium-iron nitrosyl assembly. This crystal is composed of a one-dimensional chain structure in the polar 2 space group. Because of spontaneous electric polarization, it exhibits a NLO effect of second harmonic generation (SHG). The SHG signal reversibly changes by alternate irradiation with 473 and 804 nm laser lights. The observed photoreversible switching effect on SHG is caused by photoinduced linkage isomerization of the metal nitrosyl sites, i.e., M-N═O ↔ M-O═N. Such an optically switchable NLO crystal should be useful for optical devices such as optical filters and optical shutters as well as probes in SHG microscopy.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) provides an alternative approach to targeted cancer treatment, but the therapeutic mechanism of advanced nanodrugs applied to live cells and tissue is still not well understood. Herein, we employ the hybrid hyperspectral stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and transient absorption (TA) microscopy developed for real-time in vivo visualization of the dynamic interplay between the unique photoswichable lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticle-conjugated rose bengal and triphenylphosphonium (LD-UCNP@CS-Rb-TPP) probe synthesized and live cancer cells. The Langmuir pharmacokinetic model associated with SRS/TA imaging is built to quantitatively track the uptakes and pharmacokinetics of LD-UCNP@CS-Rb-TPP within cancer cells.

The second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) responses of a donor-acceptor stenhouse adduct (DASA) are investigated by using a computational approach combining molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Specific force fields for the open and closed photoswitching forms are first parameterized and validated according to the Joyce protocol, in order to finely reproduce the geometrical features and potential energy surfaces of both isomers in chloroform solution. Then, DFT calculations are performed on structural snapshots extracted at regular time steps of the MD trajectories to address the influence of the thermalized conformational dynamics on the NLO responses related to hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) experiments.

Upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) exhibit unique nonlinear optical properties that can be harnessed in microscopy, sensing, and photonics. However, forming high-resolution nano- and micropatterns of UCNPs with large packing fractions is still challenging. Additionally, there is limited understanding of how nanoparticle patterning chemistries are affected by the particle size.

Nonlinear optical (NLO) switchable materials play a crucial role in the fields of electronics and optoelectronics. The selection of an appropriate switching approach is vital in designing such materials to enhance their NLO response. Among various approaches, thermos-switching materials have shown a 4-fold increase in NLO response compared to other photo-switching materials.
