Department of pediatric intensive care, centre hospitalier universitaire de Nantes, Children's hospital, 44000 Nantes, France.

Published: April 2021

An 11-year-old girl experienced an episode of near-drowning. She was immediately rescued and was defibrillated. Transthoracic echocardiography and coronary computed tomographic angiography confirmed the diagnosis of anomalous left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA). We report a rare description of this congenital coronary anomaly in a child, revealed after exercise-induced sudden cardiac arrest while swimming.

A Review of Long QT Syndrome: Everything a Hospitalist Should Know.

Hosp Pediatr

April 2020

Pediatric Hospital Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Penn State Children's Hospital, Hershey, Pennsylvania;

In this article, we will review various aspects of long QT syndrome (LQTS) necessary for hospitalists who care for children, adolescents, and young adults who have known LQTS and also review presenting features that should make one consider LQTS as a cause of hospitalization. Pediatric hospitalists care for patients who have suffered near-drowning, unexplained motor vehicular accidents, brief resolved unexpected events, sudden infant death syndrome, recurrent miscarriages, syncope, or seizures. These common conditions can be clinical clues in patients harboring 1 of 16 LQTS genetic mutations.

We present a case of a 51-year-old man who went to the emergency department after an almost-drowning episode, presenting with muscular weakness, myalgia and dark urine. Laboratory data showed a severe rhabdomyolysis (creatine kinase 497 510 U/L). Despite aggressive fluid therapy, an oliguric acute kidney injury was established with temporary need of haemodialysis.

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI) is a well-established noninvasive imaging modality in clinical cardiology. Its ability to provide tissue characterization make it well suited for the study of patients with cardiac diseases. We describe a multi-modality imaging evaluation of a 45-year-old man who experienced a near drowning event during swimming.

Purpose Of Review: Filamentous fungal infections due to rare opportunistic moulds can be transmitted with an allograft. However, epidemiologic and clinical characteristics of donor-derived filamentous fungal infections (DDFFIs) in transplant recipients are poorly understood. Hence, the aim of this article is to describe donor-related risk factors, clinical presentation, graft and recipient outcomes associated with DDFFIs.
