Complementary LEEM and eV-TEM for imaging and spectroscopy.

Transmission electron microscopy at very low energy is a promising way to avoid damaging delicate biological samples with the incident electrons, a known problem in conventional transmission electron microscopy. For imaging in the 0-30 eV range, we added a second electron source to a low energy electron microscopy (LEEM) setup, enabling imaging and spectroscopy in both transmission and reflection mode at nanometer (nm) resolution. The latter is experimentally demonstrated for free-standing graphene. Exemplary eV-TEM micrographs of gold nanoparticles suspended on graphene and of DNA origami rectangles on graphene oxide further establish the capabilities of the technique. The long and short axes of the DNA origami rectangles are discernable even after an hour of illumination with low energy electrons. In combination with recent developments in 2D membranes, allowing for versatile sample preparation, eV-TEM is paving the way to damage-free imaging of biological samples at nm resolution.

Vanadium dioxide (VO) has received significant interest in the context of nanophotonic metamaterials and memories owing to its reversible insulator-metal transition associated with significant changes in its optical and electronic properties. The phase transition of VO has been extensively studied for several decades, and the ways how to control its hysteresis characteristics relevant for memory applications have significantly improved. However, the hysteresis dynamics and stability of coexisting phases during the transition have not been studied on the level of individual single-crystal VO nanoparticles (NPs), although they represent the fundamental component of ordinary polycrystalline films and can also act like nanoscale memory units on their own.

Antibacterial and Cytotoxic Methylthioether-Containing Cytochalasins from AS-506, an Endozoic Fungus Associated with Deep-Sea Sponge of Magellan Seamounts.

Ten cytochalasin derivatives, including six new methylthioether-containing chaetoglobosins (thiochaetoglobosins A-F, ), a new related congener (18-nor-prochaetoglobosin II, ), and three known unsulfured counterparts (), were isolated and identified from AS-506, an endozoic fungus isolated from a deep-sea sponge, which was collected from Magellan Seamounts in the Western Pacific Ocean. Their structures were determined by extensive interpretation of the spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic data, as well as by ECD calculations. Structurally, thiochaetoglobosins A-F () represent the first examples of chaetoglobosin derivatives containing a methylthioether group in the molecules, while 18-nor-prochaetoglobosin II () is the first 18-nor-chaetoglobosin derivative.
