We report the complete mitogenome of the common dolphin, . Overall structure of the 16,387 bp mitogenome was very similar to those of other delphinid species, including the ancient individuals. Multigene phylogeny revealed that was most closely related to Stenella coeruleoalba, and clustered well with other species within the subfamily Delphininae.

In the last decade, the frequency of the use of the Bonnet Carré Spillway (BCS) to divert water from the Mississippi River by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has dramatically increased. The BCS is designed to protect the city of New Orleans, Louisiana from levee breaches and devastating floods. In 2011 and 2019, during extreme flood events, the USACE diverted 6.

Common dolphin's shipping noise risk assessment on the Portuguese coast.

Mar Pollut Bull

December 2024

LARSys, Universidade do Algarve, Estr. da Penha, Faro 8005-139, Portugal.

Ocean noise generated by human activities at sea has been increasing over the decades, affecting marine ecosystems. Ship traffic flow between the Mediterranean or South Atlantic and northern Europe makes the coast of Portugal one of the most intense shipping highways on a global scale. Among the cetaceans of the coast of Portugal, the common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) was selected as a target species.

Marine mammal populations, particularly the common dolphin Delphinus delphis in the North-East Atlantic, play an essential role as indicators of ecosystem health. Effective monitoring of these populations is essential for assessing anthropogenic impacts, especially in the context of current threats such as fisheries bycatch. The MOTHY drift model, initially designed for oil spills and then adapted to carcass drift, is being used in part of the North East Atlantic (Bay of Biscay, English Chanel, and North Sea) to estimate the bycatch mortality of common dolphins.

In the last 25 years, nematode parasites of the genus have attracted international attention from various socio-economic sectors, with serious concern about the impact of these parasites on seafood quality and safety, and public health (related to both zoonoses and allergy). A knowledge-based understanding of the population structure of spp. is useful to provide valuable data about the infection dynamics, host specificity and its ability to adapt to local environments and to climate change by adapting to the food-web structure.

The acoustic ecology of a previously unexamined dolphin population in the Mediterranean was assessed by investigating how sound emissions and acoustic features are influenced by concurrent conditions. Whistles and click-trains emission rates were compared among different environmental, social and behavioural conditions. Structural variability of 3928 good/high-quality vocalizations was analysed in relation to contexts through a two-stage approach.
