In this study, we analyzed the complete mitochondrial genome of the cavity-nesting honeybee, . The mitochondrial genome of was observed to be a circular molecule of 15,278 bp and was similar to that of the other cavity-nesting honeybee species. The average AT content in the mitochondrial genome was 84%. It was predicted to contain 13 protein-coding, 24 tRNA and two rRNA genes, along with one A + T-rich control region, besides three - repeats.

D-loop mutations in mitochondrial DNA are a risk factor for chemotherapy resistance in esophageal cancer.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Department of Gastroenterological Surgery, Graduate School of Medicine, Osaka University, 2-2-E2, Yamada-Oka, Suita, Osaka, 565-0871, Japan.

Esophageal cancer is a highly aggressive disease, and acquired resistance to chemotherapy remains a significant hurdle in its treatment. mtDNA, crucial for cellular energy production, is prone to mutations at a higher rate than nuclear DNA. These mutations can accumulate and disrupt cellular function; however, mtDNA mutations induced by chemotherapy in esophageal cancer remain unexplored.

Decoding TDP-43: the molecular chameleon of neurodegenerative diseases.

Acta Neuropathol Commun

December 2024

Shenzhen Baoan Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, Shenzhen, Guang Dong, 518000, China.

TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) has emerged as a critical player in neurodegenerative disorders, with its dysfunction implicated in a wide spectrum of diseases including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), and Alzheimer's disease (AD). This comprehensive review explores the multifaceted roles of TDP-43 in both physiological and pathological contexts. We delve into TDP-43's crucial functions in RNA metabolism, including splicing regulation, mRNA stability, and miRNA biogenesis.

Background: The frequent communication between African and Southeast Asian (SEA) countries has led to the risk of imported malaria cases in the China-Myanmar border (CMB) region. Therefore, tracing the origins of new malaria infections is important in the maintenance of malaria-free zones in this border region. A new genotyping tool based on a robust mitochondrial (mt) /apicoplast (apico) barcode was developed to estimate genetic diversity and infer the evolutionary history of Plasmodium falciparum across the major distribution ranges.

Cryopreservation induces various cryodamages to the structural or functional aspects of boar sperm, resulting in the deterioration of sperm quality. The extent of cryodamages varies significantly among different individual boars. In our study, 50 boars with either good sperm freezability (GSF) or poor sperm freezability (PSF) were selected from a population of 402 boars.

A recent study proposed a new genetic lineage of leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) based on genetic analysis, environmental history, and local ecological knowledge (LEK), suggesting the existence of two possible species or subspecies on the beaches of Oaxaca, diverging ~ 13.5 Mya. However, this hypothesis may be influenced by nuclear mitochondrial DNA segments (NUMTs), which could have been misamplified as true mtDNA.
