While dogs have remarkable abilities for social cognition and communication, the number of words they learn to recognize typically remains very low. The reason for this limited capacity is still unclear. We hypothesized that despite their human-like auditory abilities for analysing speech sounds, their word processing capacities might be less ready to access phonetic details. To test this, we developed procedures for non-invasive measurement of event-related potentials (ERPs) for language stimuli in awake dogs ( = 17). Dogs listened to familiar instruction words and phonetically similar and dissimilar nonsense words. We compared two different artefact cleaning procedures on the same data; they led to similar results. An early (200-300 ms; only after one of the cleaning procedures) and a late (650-800 ms; after both cleaning procedures) difference was present in the ERPs for known versus phonetically dissimilar nonsense words. There were no differences between the ERPs for known versus phonetically similar nonsense words. ERPs of dogs who heard the instructions more often also showed larger differences between instructions and dissimilar nonsense words. The study revealed not only dogs' sensitivity to known words, but also their limited capacity to access phonetic details. Future work should confirm the reported ERP correlates of word processing abilities in dogs.

Voice quality serves as a rich source of information about speakers, providing listeners with impressions of identity, emotional state, age, sex, reproductive fitness, and other biologically and socially salient characteristics. Understanding how this information is transmitted, accessed, and exploited requires knowledge of the psychoacoustic dimensions along which voices vary, an area that remains largely unexplored. Recent studies of English speakers have shown that two factors related to speaker size and arousal consistently emerge as the most important determinants of quality, regardless of who is speaking.

Objectives: To investigate the influence of frequency-specific audibility on audiovisual benefit in children, this study examined the impact of high- and low-pass acoustic filtering on auditory-only and audiovisual word and sentence recognition in children with typical hearing. Previous studies show that visual speech provides greater access to consonant place of articulation than other consonant features and that low-pass filtering has a strong impact on perception on acoustic consonant place of articulation. This suggests visual speech may be particularly useful when acoustic speech is low-pass filtered because it provides complementary information about consonant place of articulation.

Associations between arithmetic and reading skills suggest that these important abilities may rely, at least in part, on shared neurocognitive processes. It has been argued that retrieval of arithmetic facts may rely on phonological processing; however, very few studies have explored this association using neural indices and whether it manifests similarly in children and adults. Here we examined event related potentials (ERPs) as an indirect neural correlate of arithmetic fact retrieval, and whether variability in ERP modulation is associated with individual differences in phonological processing (verbal working memory, rate of access, and phonological awareness).

Background Acoustic vocal analysis provides objective and measurable values for various voice parameters, such as fundamental frequency (F0), shimmer, jitter, and the noise-to-harmony ratio (NHR). In severely dysphonic patients, who present increased variability in glottic cycles and abnormalities in vocal intensity, conventional acoustic analysis is an unreliable predictor of dysphonia. The logarithmic transformation of the vocal spectrum (cepstrum) allows capturing the signal without relying on recording technique, frequency, or vocal intensity.

Pronoun production involves at least two processes: (i) deciding to refer to a referent with a pronoun instead of a full NP and (ii) determining the pronoun's form. In the present study, we assess whether the second of these processes occurs as a by-product of the first process-namely, does accessing the message-level representation of the referent provide access to the features required to determine pronoun form, meaning that pronouns should be robust to errors, or are pronoun features determined through an agreement operation with the antecedent, in which case they may be susceptible to agreement attraction, similar to subject-verb agreement. Prior lab experiments suggest that pronouns display number attraction at a similar rate to verbs.
