Article Abstract
Methylated amines are ubiquitous in the environment and play a role in regulating the earth's climate via a set of complex biological and chemical reactions. Microbial degradation of these compounds is thought to be a major sink. Recently we isolated a facultative methylotroph, Gemmobacter sp. LW-1, an isolate from the unique environment Movile Cave, Romania, which is capable of methylated amine utilization as a carbon source. Here, using a comparative genomics approach, we investigate how widespread methylated amine utilization is within members of the bacterial genus Gemmobacter. Seven genomes of different Gemmobacter species isolated from diverse environments, such as activated sludge, fresh water, sulphuric cave waters (Movile Cave) and the marine environment were available from the public repositories and used for the analysis. Our results indicate that methylamine utilization is a distinctive feature of selected members of the genus Gemmobacter, namely G. aquatilis, G. lutimaris, G. sp. HYN0069, G. caeni and G. sp. LW-1 have the genetic potential while others (G. megaterium and G. nectariphilus) have not.

Two new zinc(II) complexes, tri-ethyl-ammonium di-chlorido-[2-(4-nitro-phen-yl)-4-phenyl-quinolin-8-olato]zinc(II), (CHN){Zn(CHNO)Cl] (), and bis-(tri-ethyl-ammonium) {2,2'-[1,4-phenyl-enebis(nitrilo-methyl-idyne)]diphenolato}bis-[di-chlorido-zinc(II)], (CHN)[Zn(CHNO)Cl] (), were synthesized and their structures were determined using ESI-MS spectrometry, H NMR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The results showed that the ligands 2-(4-nitro-phen-yl)-4-phenyl-quinolin-8-ol () and ,'-bis-(2-hy-droxy-benzyl-idene)benzene-1,4-di-amine () were deprotonated by tri-ethyl-amine, forming the counter-ion EtNH, which inter-acts an N-H⋯O hydrogen bond with the ligand. The Zn atoms have a distorted trigonal-pyramidal () and distorted tetra-hedral () geometries with a coord-ination number of four, coordinating with the ligands N and O atoms.

The title compound, [Zn(CHClNO)Cl], is a dinuclear zinc(II) complex with three chlorido ligands and one penta-dentate ligand containing quinolin-8-olato and bis-(pyridin-2-ylmeth-yl)amine groups. One of the two Zn atom adopts a tetra-hedral geometry and coordinates two chlorido ligands with chelate coord-ination of the N and O atoms of the quinolin-8-olato group in the ligand. The other Zn atom adopts a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometry, and coordinates one chlorido-O atom of the quinolin-8-olato group and three N atoms of the bis-(pyridin-2-ylmeth-yl)amine unit.

Two new phenyl-sulfonyl-indole derivatives, namely, -{[3-bromo-1-(phenyl-sulfon-yl)-1-indol-2-yl]meth-yl}--(4-bromo-3-meth-oxy-phen-yl)benzene-sulfonamide, CHBrNOS, (), and ,-bis-{[3-bromo-1-(phenyl-sulfon-yl)-1-indol-2-yl]meth-yl}benzene-sulfonamide, CHBrNOS, (), reveal the impact of intra-molecular π-π inter-actions of the indole moieties as a factor not only governing the conformation of ,-bis-(1-indol-2-yl)meth-yl)amines, but also significantly influencing the crystal patterns. The isolation and crystalline structure of ,'-di-benzyl-ethyl-enedi-ammonium dichloride, CHN ·2Cl, is reported. This was obtained as an unintended product of an attempted Curtius rearrangement that involved benzyl-amine as one of the reagents and 1,2-di-chloro-ethane as the solvent.
