Objectives: Aberrant growth of the maxillomandibular complex in patients with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) can be managed with dentofacial orthopaedics. However, no consensus has been reached regarding timing and evolution of the maturational stages. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine if patients with CL/P have an increased risk for delayed craniofacial maturation.

Materials And Methods: A sample of 246 cleft patients and 210 non-affected individuals was retrospectively compiled. Cephalometric radiographs taken between the ages of 10 and 14 years (girls) and 12 and 16 years (boys) were collected and assessed with the cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) method.

Results: In boys, no significant association between the presence of CL/P and a CVM score of CS3 or higher was observed in any age subsample. This was similar for a CVM score of CS5 or higher. Girls in the CL/P group had a significant lower probability of having a CVM score of at least CS3 in the subsample with age 11 to 12 (p = 0.001) and a borderline non-significant lower probability of having a CVM score of at least CS5 in the subsample with age 12 to 13 (p = 0.055).

Conclusions: The current study demonstrated a discrete delay in skeletal maturation before the pubertal growth spurt of (pre)adolescents with CL/P, especially girls. This delay was less apparent at the end of the pubertal growth spurt.

Clinical Relevance: This research suggests that the craniofacial maturational stages relevant for dentofacial orthopaedic treatment in cleft patients, especially girls, occur at higher chronological age. Further research must quantify this delay, investigate its clinical significance, and determine its effect on the timing of dentofacial orthopaedic treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • The study introduces CDSNet, a deep learning model designed to assess growth stages in orthodontics based on cervical vertebrae, dentition, and frontal sinus data from lateral cephalograms.
  • CDSNet was tested on a dataset of 1,732 patient pairs, showing significant improvements in accuracy and precision compared to traditional methods like Cervical Vertebrae Maturation (CVM) and logistic regression.
  • The model's interpretable features help clinicians in identifying growth stages, especially for patients whose growth characteristics are less defined, enhancing diagnostic accuracy in orthodontic treatments.

Purpose: Appendicular skeleton markers are commonly used for maturity assessment for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) patients. Traditionally, Risser has been a standard skeletal maturity assessment method. More recently, Sanders classification (SSMS), as a more comprehensive system, became popular, especially in decision-making for Vertebral Body Tethering (VBT).

Article Synopsis
  • The EMPRISE study evaluated empagliflozin's effectiveness in reducing various health risks (including all-cause mortality and hospitalization for heart failure) compared to DPP-4 inhibitors in patients with type 2 diabetes across four Nordic countries.
  • Using a noninterventional, multicountry cohort design and propensity score matching, the study analyzed data from 43,695 patients and employed Cox proportional hazards regression for risk assessment.
  • Results indicated that patients starting empagliflozin had a significantly lower risk of all-cause mortality, hospitalization for heart failure, cardiovascular mortality, and end-stage renal disease, though no significant differences were found for stroke or myocardial infarction.

Background: To investigate the association between oxidative balance score (OBS), cardiovascular mortality (CVM), and all-cause mortality (ACM) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients.

Methods: We included 6,119 participants with T2DM from the 2005-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). The status of CVM and ACM of participants was followed through December 31, 2019.

Department of Stomatological Hospital, Chongqing Medical University, No.426 Songshibei Road, Yubei District, Chongqing, 401147, China.

The cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) method is essential to determine the timing of orthodontic and orthopedic treatment. In this paper, a target detection model called DC-YOLOv5 is proposed to achieve fully automated detection and staging of CVM. A total of 1800 cephalometric radiographs were labeled and categorized based on the CVM stages.
