Purpose: While surgery is an effective treatment for secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SSP), it can be difficult, because affected patients are usually in a poor general condition. The present study investigated the risk factors of postoperative complications after surgery for SSP.

Methods: Eighty-eight patients with SSP who underwent surgery from January 2006 to March 2018 were investigated. Clinical data were reviewed, and a multivariate analysis was performed.

Results: Eighty-four patients (95%) were males, and the median patient age was 72 years. Underlying lung diseases were chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in 58 patients (65.9%), interstitial pneumonia in 26 (29.5%), and others in 4 (4.5%). Postoperative complications developed in 21 patients (24%). Hospital mortality/prolonged length of stay occurred in 6 patients (7%). A multivariate analysis showed that the preoperative performance status (performance status 0-2 vs. 3, hazard ratio: 6.570, 95% confidence interval: 1.980-21.800) was an independent predictor of postoperative complications.

Conclusion: Surgery for SSP contributed to early chest tube removal and favorable outcomes. However, rare fatal events occurred, and the patient performance status was a risk factor for postoperative complications. A careful evaluation of each patient's performance status is needed to determine the need for surgical intervention for SSP.

Male fertility is adversely influenced by diabetes. The beneficial effects of antioxidant bioflavonoids in improving fertility have been reported. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of silymarin on diabetes mellitus-induced male reproductive impairment in rats by investigating its role in Hsp70 and Hsp90 expression.

Exercise has a significant impact on the cardiovascular (CV) health of children and adolescents, with resultant alterations in CV structure and function being evident, even at an early age. Engagement in regular, moderate physical activity (PA) is associated with long-term CV health benefits and a reduced risk of CV disease and mortality later in life. However, competitive sports often involve PA training intensities that are beyond recommended levels for young athletes, potentially leading to adverse CV outcomes.

For the aim of achieving the carbon-free energy scenario, green hydrogen (H) with non-CO emission and high energy density is regarded as a potential alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Over the last decades, significant breakthroughs have been realized on the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which is a fundamental advancement and efficient process to generate high-purity H in the laboratory. Based on this, the development of the practical industry-oriented anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE) is on the rise, showing competitiveness with the incumbent megawatt-scale H production technologies.

Universal in the United States (US) since 2006, newborn screening (NBS) programs for sickle cell disease (SCD) allow for early identification of the disease and, as an unintentional byproduct, identification of sickle cell trait (SCT). Unlike other carrier states, SCT is highly prevalent and is found in nearly 3 million Americans, which results in important reproductive implications. Currently, all NBS programs in the US are responsible for their own policies regarding SCT notification, and little is known about how SCT notification practices are performed and how these practices vary across NBS programs.
