Chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) is recognized as one of the premier methods for measuring pH with this environmental variable expected to be an excellent biomarker for kidney diseases. Here we describe step-by-step CEST MRI experimental protocols for producing pH and perfusion maps for monitoring kidney pH homeostasis in rodents after administering iopamidol as contrast agent. Several CEST techniques, acquisition protocols and ratiometric approaches are described. The impact of length of acquisition time on the quality of the maps is detailed. These methods may be useful for investigating progression in kidney disease in vivo for rodent models. This chapter is based upon work from the COST Action PARENCHIMA, a community-driven network funded by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) program of the European Union, which aims to improve the reproducibility and standardization of renal MRI biomarkers. This experimental protocol is complemented by two separate chapters describing the basic concepts and data analysis.

Context: This study presents quantum chemical analysis of 14 distinct carbon-based nanostructures (CBN), ranging from simple molecules, like benzene, to more complex structures, such as coronene, which serves as an exemplary graphene-like model. The investigation focuses on elucidating the relationships between molecular orbital (MO) energies, the energy band gaps, electron occupation numbers (eON), electronic conduction, and the compound topologies, seeking to find the one that approaches most of a graphene-like structure for in silico studies. Through detailed examination of molecular properties including chemical hardness and chemical potential, we demonstrate that the electronic exchange between orbitals is directly influenced by the structural topology of the carbon-based nanostructures, as the electron occupation numbers and the molecular orbital energies.

Magnetic refrigeration leads the current commercialization efforts of ambient caloric cooling technologies, is considered among its peers most promising in terms of anticipated energy efficiency gain, and allows for complete elimination of harmful coolants. By now, functional magnetocaloric components (so-called regenerators) based on Mn-substituted and hydrogenated LaFeSi alloys are commercially available. However, this alloy system exhibits magnetostriction, is susceptible to fracture, oxidation, and does not passivate well, rendering it prone to failure and corrosion, particularly when using water as favorable heat exchange medium.

Introduction: Extracts from the rhizome of the traditional Chinese medicinal plant (CY) mediate a number of biologic effects that are associated with its content of isoquinoline alkaloids. CY alkaloids have shown analgesic, cardioprotective, and anti-addictive effects in animal models of disease. Since CY alkaloids are available to consumers as dietary supplements we analyzed the content of alkaloids in 14 products including open powders, capsules, and liquid formulations, capturing a majority of the products available online in the US.
