The control region is the major noncoding segment of animal mitochondrial DNA. The mammal family Bovidae comprises all artiodactyl ungulates. To infer the organization and variation of Bovidae mitochondrial DNA control region, the complete control region sequences of 91 species were analysed. The control region ranged from 677 bp () to 1329 bp () in length and can be separated into three domains among these species. The control region has the same flanking gene order from tRNA to tRNA. Genetic distances between species ranged from 0.44% (between and ) to 24.05% (between and ). The average genetic distances among the species within the genera varied from 2.78% () to 22.07% (). The average genetic distances showed significantly negative correlation with ts/tv. The maximum-likelihood method was used to construct a phylogenetic tree. Members of Bovinae appear in basal position among the Bovidae lineage. Analysis of control region genes supported the hypothesis of polyphyly for Antilopinae.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a complex disease of cartilage characterised by joint pain, functional limitation, and reduced quality of life with affected joint movement leading to pain and limited mobility. Current methods to diagnose OA are predominantly limited to X-ray, MRI and invasive joint fluid analysis, all of which lack chemical or molecular specificity and are limited to detection of the disease at later stages. A rapid minimally invasive and non-destructive approach to disease diagnosis is a critical unmet need.

The β-site amyloid precursor protein-cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1) gene polymorphism (rs638405) has been widely reported to be associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk. However, studies on the relationship between BACE1 gene polymorphism (rs638405), brain volume, and cognition in AD patients remain scarce. To investigate the effect of genetic polymorphism in BACE1 on gray matter volume (GMV) and cognition in AD, this study recruited 111 cognitively unimpaired (CU) controls and 144 AD patients.

This study investigated the incidence of new-onset cardiovascular disorders up to 3.5 years post SARS-CoV-2 infection for 56,400 individuals with COVID-19 and 1,093,904 contemporary controls without COVID-19 in the Montefiore Health System (03/11/2020 to 07/01/2023). Outcomes were new incidence of major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE), arrhythmias, inflammatory heart disease, thrombosis, cerebrovascular disorders, ischemic heart disease and other cardiac disorders between 30 days and (up to) 3.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne zoonotic flavivirus which often causes asymptomatic infection in humans but may develop into a deadly neuroinvasive disease. In this study, we aimed to investigate variables potentially associated with human WNV infection using human and mosquito WNV surveillance and monitoring datasets, established over 20 years, from 2003 to 2022, across the province of Ontario, Canada. We combined climatic and geographic data, mosquito surveillance data (n = 3010 sites), blood donation arboviral detection testing data in the human population, and demographic and socio-economic data from Canadian population censuses.
