We assembled the mitogenome of based on off-target sequences from ultraconserved elements sequencing. We found a total length of 16,850 bp, including 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, and one control region, organized in the standard avian gene order. We have built a phylogenetic tree including 26 species of swifts that suggested as sister species of and indicated exciting opportunities for biogeographic inferences involving most continents, including Neartic vs Neotropical disjunctions and local radiations across the globe. Finally, we found cases of lack of reciprocal monophyly between named species and high intra-specific divergence, suggesting that population-level studies are warranted.

Background: Mitochondrial function influences Parkinson's disease (PD) through the accumulation of pathogenic alpha-synuclein, oxidative stress, impaired autophagy, and neuroinflammation. The mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA-CN), representing the number of mitochondrial DNA copies within a cell, serves as an easily assessable proxy for mitochondrial function.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the diagnostic and prognostic capabilities of mtDNA-CN in PD.

species complex, referred to as (), is distributed globally with some species distributed in specific regions and others spread globally. In Greece, () in dogs, and and in livestock, have been repeatedly reported however only based on morphological identification. Recently, there has been a great effort to accurately identify the species belonging to the species complex, using modern molecular tools and describe their spatial distribution.

Motivation: Mitochondria are essential for cellular metabolism and are inherently flexible to allow correct function in a wide range of tissues. Consequently, dysregulated mitochondrial metabolism affects different tissues in different ways leading to challenges in understanding the pathology of mitochondrial diseases. System-level metabolic modelling is useful in studying tissue-specific mitochondrial metabolism, yet despite the mouse being a common model organism in research, no mouse specific mitochondrial metabolic model is currently available.

Seamounts are biodiversity hotspots that face increasing threats from anthropogenic activities. Seamounts host diverse sessile suspension-feeding organisms such as sponges and anthozoans, which are crucial for seamount ecosystems as they construct three-dimensional habitats utilized by numerous other animals. Therefore, accurate identification of seamount fauna, in particular of sessile suspension-feeding organisms, is of paramount importance for robust conservation efforts.

Malaria has been a leading cause of death in human populations for centuries and remains a major public health challenge in African countries, especially affecting children. Among the five Plasmodium species infecting humans, Plasmodium falciparum is the most lethal. Ancient DNA research has provided key insights into the origins, evolution, and virulence of pathogens that affect humans.
