The expression characteristics of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis-related candidate genes, , , and , were analyzed in year-round estrous rams (small-tail Han sheep, STH) and seasonally estrous rams (Sunite sheep, SNT) using qPCR. The results were as follows: was mainly expressed in pituitary, and was specifically expressed in hypothalamus in the two groups. However, and were widely expressed in the cerebrum, cerebellum, hypothalamus, pituitary, testis, epididymis, vas deferens and adrenal gland tissues in both breeds, with significant differences in the cerebellum, hypothalamus, pituitary, testis and vas deferens tissues. We speculated that and may have positive roles in different regions in ram year-round estrus. Moreover, the expression patterns of and suggested that they may regulate the estrous mode of ram via testis and vas deferens. This is the first study to systematically analyze the expression patterns of HPG axis-related genes in rams.

Multiple mating enhances luteogenesis increasing corpus luteum perfusion area and progesterone production in ewes.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study compared two groups of ewes—one allowed multiple matings and the other not—to assess the impact on corpus luteum (CL) development and functionality.
  • * The results showed that mated ewes had longer estrus, larger ovulatory follicles, and better CL perfusion and progesterone levels compared to the control group, indicating enhanced reproductive function.

Management of reproduction that relies on naturally based solutions is extremely important to counter the negative perception around hormone-based interventions. In Mediterranean latitudes and wider regions of non-tropical drylands, sheep do not normally ovulate during spring but exposure to a ram can induce oestrus and ovulation. This study assesses the response of maiden Barbarine ewes in drylands to the 'ram effect' during springtime and estimates the genetic parameters of this response.

In sheep, anatomical characteristics of the cervix and animal value limit application of reproductive technologies; therefore, most breeding is natural service. Rams are selected based on desired physical traits and semen capacity, but their contribution to flock genetics is constrained by expression of sexual behavior. In 1964, it was first reported that approximately one-third of rams expressed limited sexual interest toward ewes in estrus.

Reproductive traits are vital economic parameters in goat production, and boosting the reproductive capacity of breeding rams is crucial for enhancing the profitability of goat farming. Currently, research on the reproductive performance of Qianbei Ma goats mainly centers on investigating mechanisms associated with prolificacy and estrous ovulation in ewes, with limited emphasis on ram reproductive aspects. This study used scanning electron microscopy and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to profile the morphology of testis and the dynamic changes of Luteinizing Hormone (LH), Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), and Testosterone (T) in serum at different developmental stages of Qianbei Ma goats.

Background: It is desirable in estrus synchronization in sheep to avoid intravaginal devices and to shorten the program from 14 to 6 days. Moreover, replacement of eCG with safe, cheap, and efficient gonadotropin is in worldwide demand.

Aims: This study investigates the possibility of replacing eCG with human recombinant FSH (hrFSH) and CIDR with progesterone injections for estrous synchronization in ewes.
