In rare cases the implantation or use of a port-a-cath can be complicated by venous perforation or catheter-related infection. We describe a patient with these two complications resulting in mediastinitis. Removal of the device and prolonged antibiotic therapy cured the infection.

A 61-year-old man was referred to our hospital for Stanford type A acute aortic dissection and an emergency operation was planned. In this case, the aberrant left vertebral artery originated directly from the aortic arch.
