Predictive Maxwell's demons.

Published: December 2020

Here we study the operation efficiency of a finite-size finite-response-time Maxwell's demon, who can make future predictions. We compare the heat and mass transport rate of predictive demons to nonpredictive ones and find that predictive demons can achieve higher mass and heat transport rates over longer periods of time. We determine how the demon performance varies with response time, future sight, and the density of the gasses on which they operate.

Onsager variational principle for granular fluids.

Phys Rev E

GRASP, Institute of Physics B5a, University of Liège, B4000 Liège, Belgium.

Granular fluids, as defined by a collection of moving solid particles, is a paradigm of a dissipative system out of equilibrium. Inelastic collisions between particles is the source of dissipation, and is the origin of a transition from a gas to a liquidlike state. This transition can be triggered by an increase of the solid fraction.

Experimental Verification of Demon-Involved Fluctuation Theorems.

Phys Rev Lett

The limit of energy saving in the control of small systems has recently attracted much interest due to the concept refinement of the Maxwell demon. Inspired by a newly proposed set of fluctuation theorems, we report the first experimental verification of these equalities and inequalities in an ultracold ^{40}Ca^{+} ion system, confirming the intrinsic nonequilibrium in the system due to involvement of the demon. Based on elaborately designed demon-involved control protocols, such as the Szilard engine protocol, we provide experimentally quantitative evidence of the dissipative information and observe tighter bounds of both the extracted work and the demon's efficacy than the limits predicted by the Sagawa-Ueda theorem.

Article Synopsis
  • Cardiac perfusion MRI is crucial for detecting heart diseases, and this study develops an AI-assisted method for automatically segmenting the left ventricular myocardium from DCE-MRI data.
  • The method utilizes retrospective DCE-MRI data from 55 patients and employs image registration techniques alongside a U-Net framework to analyze the different timeframes of the MRI scans.
  • Results show that the proposed method achieves a high average similarity coefficient for myocardial segmentation, indicating its effectiveness and robustness even in the presence of potential registration errors.

Accurate, non-destructive and cost-effective estimation of crop canopy Soil Plant Analysis De-velopment(SPAD) is crucial for precision agriculture and cultivation management. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms have shown tremendous potential in predicting crop canopy SPAD. This was because they can rapidly and accurately acquire remote sensing spectral data of the crop canopy in real-time.

Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests are commonly utilized in commercial settings but pose challenges due to labor-intensive procedures and extended response times during peak demand. In contrast, real-time fluorescence and isothermal amplification assays using Crossing Priming Amplification (CPA) offer faster genetic material analysis, eliminate subjectivity, and require less manipulation and personnel training. This study aimed to validate the EasyNAT SARS-CoV-2 Assay, a diagnostic kit based on CPA, using oral and nasopharyngeal samples.
