Maintenance hemodialysis is widely used throughout the world, and anaphylactic reactions appear to be increasing in number and severity. However, the exact incidence of sensitization and the role of atopy in these reactions are not yet fully understood. All of the 111 patients routinely dialyzed in a center were tested. All patients had a complete investigation of atopy, RAST to chemicals released during the procedure of dialysis (ethylene oxide (Eto), formaldehyde, phthalic anhydride, and toluene diisocyanate), skin tests with the effluent, and the titration of blood eosinophils. The incidence of atopy was found to be lower (13.5%) than in the normal population of the area. Skin tests with either histamine or allergens are significantly (p less than 0.001) smaller than those of nondialyzed subjects, and this method does not appear to be ideal in this population of patients. Eto sensitivity ranked first (5.5%), followed by phthalic anhydride sensitivity (3.6%); 5/6 patients who had a sensitivity to Eto and/or phthalic anhydride presented symptoms during dialysis, but they never were life threatening. Formaldehyde RAST was only found in one patient who had a life-threatening reaction. Finally, three patients presenting pruritus had positive skin prick tests with the effluent of the dialyzer. All patients having a first use syndrome and 80/81 symptom-free patients did not have serum-specific IgE against the released chemicals, 5/17 patients who had a pruritus during dialysis had either positive RAST to released chemicals or skin tests to the effluent, 5/8 patients who suffered from anaphylaxis had positive RAST to released chemicals, but only those who had a positive RAST presented a severe reaction.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

In order to the antifungal activity of chitosan (CS) and to obtain a better natural bio-antimicrobial agent, CS was modified with acrylpimaric acid (APA). The grafting sites of APA on CS were controlled by adjusting the reaction time and the ratio of reactants to obtain APA grafted with CS C-NH (NCSAA) and C-OH (CSAA). Intermediates to protect C-NH (PMCSAA) and final sample derivatives (PCSAA) were prepared using phthalic anhydride.

In this communication, we have described a simple and efficient, catalyst free and solvent-free protocol for the continuous flow synthesis of rhodamine B dyes developed from 3-diethyl amino phenol and phthalic anhydride. Nearly 95% conversion was achieved within 12 min using a jacketed single screw reactor. This method is further used for the synthesis of six derivatives with 70-84% yield, which can be compared to 85% yield from a 1-hour long batch synthesis involving a catalyst.

In homogeneous catalysis, uncovering structure-activity relationships remains very rare but invaluable to understand and rationally improve performances. Here, generalizable structure-activity relationships apply to a series of heterodinuclear polymerization catalysts featuring Co(III) and s-block metals M(I/II) (M=Na(I), K(I), Ca(II), Sr(II), Ba(II)). These are shown to apply to polycarbonate production by the ring-opening copolymerizations (ROCOP) of cyclohexene oxide (CHO) and carbon dioxide (CO), conducted at high (20 bar) and low (1 bar) CO pressures, and to polyester production by copolymerization of cyclohexene oxide and phthalic anhydride (PA).

Isoindoline-1,3-dione, also referred as phthalimide, has gained recognition as promising pharmacophore due to the documented biological activities of its derivatives. Phthalimides are a family of synthetic molecules that exhibit notable bioactivity across various fields, particularly as anticancer and anti-inflammatory agents. This review focuses on syntheses and anti-inflammatory studies of the reported phthalimide derivatives.

A novel bionanocomposite of grafted chitosan-phthalic anhydride/CoO nanoparticles (CHT-PHT/CoO) was synthesized and used for the elimination of brilliant green (BG) dye from aquatic systems. The CHT-PHT/CoO material underwent several instrumental characterizations including, XRD, BET, FTIR, FESEM-EDX, and pH examinations. The impact of the key uptake factors, namely A: CHT-PHT/CoO dose, B: starting solution pH, and C: contact duration, on the effectiveness of BG removal, was mathematically optimized using the response surface methodology (RSM).
