Upgrading of heavy oil in supercritical water (SCW) was analyzed by a comprehensive analysis of GC, GC-MS, NMR, and SEM-EDX with the aid of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) as a complementary technical analysis. The significant changes in the physical properties and chemical compositions reveal the effectiveness of heavy oil upgrading by SCW. Especially, changes of intensities of conventional EPR signals from free radicals (FRs) and paramagnetic vanadyl complexes (VO) with SCW treatment were noticed, and they were explained, respectively, to understand sulfur removal mechanism (by FR intensity and environment destruction) and metal removal mechanism (by VO complexes' transformation). For the first time, it was shown that electronic relaxation times extracted from the pulsed EPR measurements can serve as sensitive parameters of SCW treatment. The results confirm that EPR can be used as a complementary tool for analyzing heavy oil upgrading in SCW, even for the online monitoring of oilfield upgrading.

Designer topological-single-atom catalysts with site-specific selectivity.

Nat Commun

January 2025

School of Materials Science and Engineering, Peking University, Beijing, P.R. China.

Designing catalysts with well-defined, identical sites that achieve site-specific selectivity, and activity remains a significant challenge. In this work, we introduce a design principle of topological-single-atom catalysts (T-SACs) guided by density functional theory (DFT) and Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations, where metal single atoms are arranged in asymmetric configurations that electronic shield topologically misorients d orbitals, minimizing unwanted interactions between reactants and the support surface. Mn/CeO catalysts, synthesized via a charge-transfer-driven approach, demonstrate superior catalytic activity and selectivity for NO removal.

Non-contact temperature sensors have gained immense popularity due to their inherent benefits, including the absence of physical interaction with targets and rapid response characteristics. In this work, KBaY(MoO):Pr was successfully synthesized utilizing a high-temperature solid-phase method. Experimental studies have indicated that multi-phonon relaxation (MPR), cross-relaxation (CR), and the unique intervalence charge transfer state (IVCT) exhibited by Pr-Mo contribute to the changes in luminescence properties.

Lignosulfonate-based deflocculant and its derivatives for water-based drilling mud: A review.

Department of Petroleum and Gas Engineering Technology, Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas, Bonny-island, PMB 5027, Rivers State, Nigeria.

Chromium-based lignosulfonate (CrLS) deflocculants that are commonly used in water-based drilling muds (WBDMs) to deflocculate bentonites under high temperature (HT), high-pressure (HP), and high-salinity (HS) oil well drilling conditions have been found to contain heavy metals such as chromium, which is toxic and degrades rapidly. However, different ways of addressing this issue have been proffered, including the use of natural polymers such as starch, cellulose, or anionic inorganic agents such as sodium polyphosphates with little or no impact. Other lignosulfonate (LS)-based deflocculants, like sodium-based LS and bio-based LS, have shown a number of benefits, such as being better for the environment, more soluble and evenly distributed in WBDMs, more resistant to salt contamination, easily biodegradable, safe, and able to go through different chemical changes.

Preparation and characterization of the octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) modified sphingan WL gum as novel biopolymeric surfactants.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Heavy Oil Processing and Centre for Bioengineering and Biotechnology, China University of Petroleum (East China), Qingdao, Shandong, People's Republic of China. Electronic address:

Combining polymer and surfactant in one agent namely polymeric surfactants with both high viscosity and surface activity has become a viable alternative for the traditional enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes. With the purpose of developing new polymeric surfactants, the biopolymer flooding agent sphingan WL gum was modified by octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) through the esterification reaction. The effects of molecular weight (MW) of WL and the OSA: WL ratio on the properties of the products were investigated.

Molecular composition of hydroxyl radical-resistant organics in municipal solid waste leachate.

School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Southwest Jiaotong University, Chengdu, Sichuan 611756, China. Electronic address:

Although hydroxyl radicals (OH) degrade organic pollutants nonselectively, their mineralization rate during the treatment of waste leachate biological treatment effluent (BTL) using Fenton or Fenton-like systems is not high, and the reason is unknown. In this study, we investigated three typical Fenton-like systems that act on dissolved organic matter (DOM) in BTL. We analyzed the molecular composition of DOM resistant to OH, using ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry.
