Cell-cell junctions, in particular adherens junctions, are major determinants of tissue mechanics during morphogenesis and homeostasis. In attempts to link junctional mechanics to tissue mechanics, many have utilized explicitly or implicitly equilibrium approaches based on adhesion energy, surface energy, and contractility to determine the mechanical equilibrium at junctions. However, it is increasingly clear that they have significant limitations, such as that it remains challenging to link the dynamics of the molecular components to the resulting physical properties of the junction, to its remodeling ability, and to its adhesion strength. In this perspective, we discuss recent attempts to consider the aspect of energy dissipation at junctions to draw contact points with soft matter physics where energy loss plays a critical role in adhesion theories. We set the grounds for a theoretical framework of the junction mechanics that bridges the dynamics at the molecular scale to the mechanics at the tissue scale.

Trees are complex and dynamic living structures, where structural stability is essential for survival and for public safety in urban environments. Tree forks, as structural junctions, are key to tree integrity but are prone to failure under stress. The specific mechanical contributions of their internal conical structures remain largely unexplored.

Silicon carbide (SiC) metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) are a future trend in traction inverters in electric vehicles (EVs), and their thermal safety is crucial. Temperature-sensitive electrical parameters' (TSEPs) indirect detection normally requires additional circuits, which can interfere with the system and increase costs, thereby limiting applications. Therefore, there is still a lack of cost-effective and sensorless thermal monitoring techniques.

A Comparative Study of Two WAAM Patterns for Structures with Grid Fin Characteristics.

Materials (Basel)

January 2025

Zhejiang Academy of Special Equipment Science, Hangzhou 310009, China.

As a critical component of rocket systems, the grid fin is widely applied in the aerospace industry. Compared to traditional manufacturing methods and other additive manufacturing (AM) techniques, wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is more advantageous in its time and cost efficiency, especially when it is utilized in the large-scale production of components. Given the significant effect of the welding strategies on the quality of manufactured parts, we investigated two distinct WAAM printing orientations, horizontal, or lie (L), and perpendicular, or stand (S), using a small-scale model.

In the present study, a novel normally-off vertical GaN MOSFET with an enhanced AlGaN/GaN channel on the sidewall has been proposed using the technology computer-aided design (TCAD) simulation. By using the selective area growth process, the trench structure and the enhanced sidewall channel are formed simultaneously, which is beneficial to enhance the conduction capability compared with the conventional trenched MOSFET. It demonstrates that a proper hole concentration and thickness of the p-GaN layer are key parameters to balance the threshold voltage, on-state resistance, and off-state breakdown voltage, resulting in the highest Baliga's figure of merit value.

This study evaluates the performance of continuous flow and drop-based microfluidic devices for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) under identical hydrodynamic and chemical conditions. Flows at low values of Dean number (De < 1) were investigated, where the contribution of the vortices forming inside the drop to the additional mixing inside the reactor should be most noticeable. In the drop-based microfluidic device, discrete aqueous drops serving as reactors were generated by flow focusing using silicone oil as the continuous phase.
