Standard Radiological Procedures: Currently, the combination of mammography and sonography is the gold standard in breast diagnostics. If there are any uncertainties, further examinations such as breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and, in studies, computer tomographic procedures can be used. These investigations are carried out separately.
Methodical Innovation: The combination of different imaging techniques in fusion devices promises a significant improvement in breast diagnostics. Advantages of the new imaging technique include the simultaneous acquisition of different image modalities with a fixed breast, which allows better spatial localization of the region of interest (ROI). This can also reduce the time and investigator effort and compensate for the weaknesses of one imaging technique with the strengths of a second imaging technique. The current state of research and the history of the fusion of ultrasound and mammography in breast diagnostics are summarized.
