Recent technological advancements, including computer-assisted drug discovery, gene-editing techniques, and high-throughput screening approaches, have greatly expanded the palette of methods for the discovery of peptides available to researchers. These emerging strategies, driven by recent advances in bioinformatics and multi-omics, have significantly improved the efficiency of peptide drug discovery when compared with traditional in vitro and in vivo methods, cutting costs and improving their reliability. An added benefit of peptide-based drugs is the ability to precisely target protein-protein interactions, which are normally a particularly challenging aspect of drug discovery.

Small ORF-encoded peptides (SEPs) are a class of low molecular weight proteins and peptides comprising <100 amino acids with important functions in various life activities. Although the sequence length is short, SEPs might also have post-translational modification (PTM). Phosphorylation is one of the most essential PTMs of proteins.

The identification of short open reading frame-encoded peptides (SEP) and different proteoforms in single cultures of gut microbes offers new insights into a largely neglected part of the microbial proteome landscape. This is of particular importance as SEP provide various predicted functions, such as acting as antimicrobial peptides, maintaining cell homeostasis under stress conditions, or even contributing to the virulence pattern. They are, thus, taking a poorly understood role in structure and function of microbial networks in the human body.

The emerging functions of mini zinc finger (MIF) microproteins in seed plants: A minireview.

Biochimie

March 2024

UMR DIADE, Université de Montpellier, IRD, 911 Avenue Agropolis, 34394, cedex 5, Montpellier, France. Electronic address:

Mini zinc fingers constitute a class of microproteins that appeared early in evolution and expanded in seeds plants. In this review, the phylogenetic history, the functions and the mode of action of Mini zinc fingers in plants are reported and discussed. It appears that mini zinc fingers play an important role in the control of plant development.
